Paul | 13 comments Probably the most influential and eyeopening for me was Daniel Quinn's Ishmael. If you haven't read it, I can't recommend it enough!!
The message of it is a lot more important than the actual narrative, in which there is little.

Paul | 13 comments Agreed. Though I wish to give the author my time and respect, sometimes it just isn't up to standard. I find with me, my interest wains. It may be a good book with beautiful prose, with insightful things to say, it will just lose me. (Sometimes).

Though at the moment I am not in the middle of any Philosophy books, I have been obsessed with Plato. I find the Socratic Dialogues fascinating and fun to read.

Paul | 13 comments I bought the Hemlock Cup recently! I heard it may be a little dry. There is almost no information on the Historical Socrates, that is why I was excited for this book!

I am not an academic, I consider myself an Intellectual Layman :) So I may not enjoy it all that much!

Paul | 13 comments I believe that was an advertisement lol. I will check it out! Actually to be honest, I already looked it up. Some good reviews. Very cool! Very exciting!

Paul | 13 comments And yes, read Ishmael! lol

message 6: by Paul (new)

Paul | 13 comments No, not published. Though I am trying to get some plays published at the moment. It is hard to do so, especially with Absurd. But I will keep trying.
I am envious of you. Very cool to have a published book!

Paul | 13 comments I'll have to check out those sites. The one I was using was Lulu. For printed copies.

Paul | 13 comments Quite possibly!

So what other books or authors do you most like to read?

message 9: by Paul (new)

Paul | 13 comments I have actually been reading similar things right now! I just read The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine. I was going to recommend it, but I just read an article this morning saying that she may have lied about a lot of the details. Which I found thoroughly disheartening.

But I like to read all kinds. A good fantasy or techno thriller does the trick for me sometimes. I read a lot of plays, at the moment I am making my way through Sophocles. Which are greatly depressing and entertaining!

Paul | 13 comments I read the The Stranger for the first time the other day. I enjoyed it tremendously. Has anyone read it also?

message 11: by Paul (new)

Paul | 13 comments It is hard to describe. It is a novel, and it follows a man after his mother has died and events that lead him to being arrested and in imprisoned. The first half are the events and the second half is his trial and sentencing.
The reason it is hard to describe is because the prose isn't particularly beautiful, nor are the events exciting, NOR is the character very endearing.
But it is the philosophy behind that really gets you thinking and it makes it interesting. Existentialist and absurd. It is a hard book to recommend, but a fun book to dissect and discuss!
