I am reading "The Museum of Extraordinary Things" by Alice Hoffman. I love Alice Hoffman, but especially when she sets her books in different time periods. This one takes place around the time of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. She mixes the real, brutal and ugly, with a kind of magical realism that feels completely natural and honest as well as beautifully written.
I have just started reading "The Orchardist" by Amanda Coplin. Set in Wasington State at the turn of the 20th century & tells the story of Talmadge, who tends his orchards alone, and the two young pregnant girls he takes in out of compassion for their plight.
