Marrik sat hunched up in a branch of a tree. It was early in the morning. He came here after he left Elora's house because he had no where else to stay and being up in the trees made him think he was on his home planet which made him sad and long to be back there. He pulled his hood down farther on his face and watched the sun rise.
Elora wandered through the maze of trees, breathing in the fresh air. She'd needed to relax a little bit after her anxiety last night. She spotted some more of the flowers she'd been picking; cabbage roses. They were Camden's favorite. She got on her knees, fanning her sundress out and around her, picking the flowers gently.
Marrik's eyes began to wonder off the rising sun. They moved to the birds waking up from their nests, the rabbits comin out from their holes, the beautiful flowers that blossomed everywhere this time of year, and Elora's hands that picked them. Marrik fought over whether he should say hi or just stay to the shadows because he caused her enough pain last night.
Elora hummed to herself, a nursery rhyme her parents used to sing to her on Arrianith. A few strands of her dirty blonde hair fell out of her pony tail as she had gone through the forest. She raised her hands slowly, they were still a little shaky from yesterday, and pulled the hair tie out. She shook her head and let her hair fall past her shoulders, and gently rest a little more than halfway down her back.
Marrik his his instincts to stay high up in the tree and smoothly and gracefully jumped out, landing softly on his bare feet. He walked over and found a beautiful blue flower amongst the white ones and brought it up behind Elora. "Are you feeling better?" He asked handing her the flower.
Elora didn't jump when she heard Marrik's voice behind her, she just smiled. She turned around and smiled at him, getting up slowly and brushing herself off. She noticed the flower in his hand and reached out to take it, her smile grew and she felt heat in her cheeks. "Thank you" she said, smelling the flower, "It's beautiful and yes, I'm feeling much better."
Marrik nodded as she took the flower out of his hands. "Are you just out here to pick flowers?" He asked her, concerned. It was very dumb of her to be out here in the forest alone. If she was scared of being out on the streets then why was she alone in the forest? She would be easily mugged here. Who knows what type of things are in the forest.
"Well.....yes." She said, after a moments hesitation, not sure what other reason she would have for being out in the forest. "Just getting some fresh air." She smiled at him, "What about you?"
"I'm always out here." He shrugged. He had no where else to stay and the trees reminded him of his home planet, that's why he slept in them. "You really shouldn't be out here alone though." He told her.
"Why not?" She asked, a puzzled expression across her face. She'd always picked flowers in this forest, she felt safe in it....perhaps she wasn't and she just didn't know. She felt goosebumps come up on her arms, his warning putting her on edge.
Marrik grabbed her arm gently. He was surprised she didn't figure it out a long time ago. "The forest is more dangerous then the streets and you're out here alone. Who knows how many times you've been out here. Ther could be people watching Elora. It's not safe." He told her in a hushed time.
"I-I'm sorry..." She stammered, looking around slowly, feeling like she was being watched. "I didn't know." She looks up to him and takes a step closer, feeling safer next to him.
"I don't want you coming out here anymore." He told her, concerned for he safety. "Well not alone." He said. "Anyways." He changed the subject. "Since we're here you practice some more."
"Okay, if you say so." She says, agreeing not to come out on her own anymore. Elora smiled at his determination, instead of protesting this time. She readied her stance, giving him a playful smile before lunging for him, laughing.
Marrik laughed slightly and caught her in his arms and brought her down to the ground with him. He pinned her shoulders to the ground lightly. "This isn't play time Elora." He warned her.
Elora's eyes sparkled with amusement. "Oh come on..." She said, pleading with him to play. He made her feel like a child sometimes and she liked it. She whimpered slightly, trying to convince him.
Marrik chuckled at her childish acts. "No Elora." He told her firmly with a smile on his face. "Now is not the time. Now is the time to practice." He said cupping her face with his colorful hands. "How about this?" He asked. "If you land five hits on me ill do whatever you want or tell you whatever you want."
"Deal!" She said quickly, scrambling to her feet. She brushed off her sun dress and flipped her hair over her shoulder. She got into her stance again, but with a more serious attitude this time. She quickly landed a shot to his side with her knee. She smiled at him. "One." She said playfully.
"Good." He nodded. "Keep going." Her told her. He was going to let her get the five hits in easily and with out a fight. He wanted her to feel accomplished and not feel bad about losing. So he was going to let her win.
She landed two more shots to his stomach, noticing that it was incredibly easy. She was confused, but kept going anyway. "Okay, that's 3. Why don't we raise the stakes?" She asked mischievously, an idea brewing inside of her head.
Marrik raised an eyebrow at her. "Like what?" He asked. "Aren't they high enough?" He didnt mind telling her a few things about himself but how much worse could it get?
"We'll compete for it... I've already got a head start, if you can land five shots on me before I can get two more on you..." She pauses, "I'll do whatever you want or tell you whatever you want.." She smiles, this would definitely give her the drive to win! He was just making it too easy for her.
"No." He said. If he did that he would end up hurting her. Her hits were weak and light on him. "Just keep it the way it is. How about I actually try?" He suggested. The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her.
"Okay, but don't go easy on me!" She said, a fire lighting up inside of her. Her determination burned as she put her feet shoulder width apart. She was ready, and she attempted a quick strike with her knee.
"No promises." He teased. He quickly blocked her knee and placed it back down on the ground. "Go faster." He told her.
Elora did as she was told, executing her movements faster. She made plenty of sharp, quick movements and landed another shot on Marrik. Her eyes lit up and a devilish smile spread across her face. "One more chance Marrik..." She taunted.
Marrik winced when She hit him. He was letting her win only he was making it last longer he was making a game out of it. One that he was planning on losing. "I know." He said calmly.
Elora took a deep breathe, she only had to hit him once more and she was done, at least for today. Then she could ask him anything, he would do anything if she won. What would she ask of him? She let that thought driving her forward, moving much quicker than she was before. She brought her elbow up to his stomach, after finding an opening, stopping right before she made contact. She playfully nudged him in the ribs instead and smiled at him. "I win."
Marrik stood there and let her hit him. "You do win." He laughed. "Now come on." He took her hand and went to the nearest tree. "Can you climb?" He asked her.
Elora let Marrik lead her by the hand, her dainty and fair skinned fingers intertwined with his colorful ones. She had been focusing on their hands when she looked up, she saw just how big the tree was. She immediately began to notice footholds she could use as she examined the tree. Can you climb? That's what he wanted to know, and indeed she could. "Yes...I'm not stellar at it, but I can manage." She said, smiling. The task seemed daunting but she was excited too.
"Good." He said. He was already half way up the tree while she was answering his question. "Are you coming?" He asked when he made to the top of the tree.
Elora didn't respond, she simply followed him up to the top of the tree. Her progress was slow, but rewarding, she found herself next to Marrik in mere seconds.
"Good job." He told her, staring up into the morning sky. "So ask me anything." He said ready for anything so either asked or told him to do.
"Hmm.... I don't want to make you do something you don't want to so..." She began, flashing him a smile. " If you could go anywhere, and I mean anywhere, where would you go and who would you take with you?" She asked, unsure of herself. Would he really answer her question?
Marrik swung his legs back and forth through the air while he thought. "I'd go to my home planet." He nodded, making sure he said the right thing. "An I would probably take you because I promised I would take you and you're the only other person I know."
"Really?" She said, meeting his gaze with wide and innocent eyes. "You'd take me?" She cocks her head to the side in a gesture of disbelief, but she doesn't look away.
Marrik nodded and turned to look right at her. "Well of course." He shrugged. "Like I said you're my only friend and I know you really wanted to see it, so why not." He told her. "Next question."
Marrik's answer had taken her by surprise. Why would anyone want to take her anywhere? No. Marrik wouldn't want her to think like that. She pondered up another question. "Ergans..." She began, "I don't know much about them...what is your emotional state? I've always heard rumors that Ergans don't feel any kind of emotion...but I don't really think that's true, is it?" Her gaze faltered for just a moment, unable to hold her gaze as she asked that question. What was wrong with her?
((Hint hint lol ;) ))
((Hint hint lol ;) ))
Marrik cocked his head slightly and pursed his lips. "Most try not to. It gets in the way of what we're meant to do. So yes most of us don't show emotions but we still have them." He explained. "Does that make any sense?" He asked.
"Sort of..." She thought about it for a minute. "So you have them, you just don't show them?" She asked, wondering how anyone could do that. She showed so much emotion every day....she would explode or something if she couldn't show it. "How do you do that? How do you not show it?" That's what she asked next, her curiosity getting the better of her.
Marrik looked at her like the answer was obvious. "It's easy." He shrugged. "I have the same amount of emotions you have I just know how to keep them hidden. If you show emotions it makes you weaker. It makes your opponent find your weak point faster. Your weak point doesn't have to be a spot on your body it cold be a certain way people talk to you or a certain memory or certain words. Like what happened last night. Your fear. You can learn how to controll that like I do."
She moved a little closer to him, she had looked down and gotten a little dizzy. She distracted herself from the heights by gazing into his eyes as she whispered. "Will you show me how?" Her big brown eyes were pleading, looking just as naive and innocent as ever.
"It takes years to master unlike fighting." He told her, letting her scoot closer. "Ill show you sometime."
She really hoped he would. If she could somehow shut off her emotions, she could think clearer and be more effective in high anxiety situations. She shivered at the thought of anyone exploiting her emotions as a weakness. "I'd like that." She said slowly but gently.
"It's going to take a long time just to understand it though." He warned her. "Lots and Lots of practice. Non stop actually." He said. "What's the next question?" He asked, moving on.
"Umm..." She squirmed, wanting to ask him something but knowing it was probably too soon. Too much, too fast. She didn't want to scare him away. "What did you think of me...the first time we met? First impressions, they meant a lot to my parents..." She said, curious as to what impression she gave people.
"First impression..." He thought about the first day he saw her that night. She was scared and alone and he saved her from the dark. "I think you were just another girl that was scared of the dark." He shrugged. "But you turned out to be so much more."
Elora felt tears rimming her eyes. "You think so?" She said, her voice a little shaky. She had been scared that night and she was so thankful that Marrik had saved her. She wouldn't be here now if he hadn't.
