Lisa (lisxsil) I am Lisa, an avid reader, mainly of crime/thriller/mystery, living in the Highlands.
(also have a wee bit of a penchant for cook books!)

message 2: by Ann (new)

Ann | 3 comments I have been waiting for some "action" from this group but there seems to be little! I am in the US but love the Highlands, have been to Scotland 6-7 times. Now, a good mystery set there would be lovely!

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisxsil) Hi Ann, I know it does seem quiet, I was a wee bit hesitant about joining. There are quite a few thriller/crime/mystery type books out there set in the Highlands and on the Islands, I have read a couple, but many more to read.

message 4: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Prather | 3 comments The books of A. D. Scott are great Highland mysteries. The first one is "A Small Death in the Great Glen". Highly recommend!

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisxsil) ooh thanks for that Patricia, another few books to add to my list! I have not come across this writer before, and always on the lookout for new writers to read

message 6: by Annie (new)

Annie (annieargyll) Hiya. I'm from the US but moved to Scotland in 2000 to marry my Scot. Ann, these aren't a mystery, but have you read the Outlander series?

message 7: by Marie (new)

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments How about Peter May's mystery thrillers set on the Island of Lewis? The Lewis Trilogy are recommended.
The Blackhouse The Blackhouse (Lewis Trilogy, #1) by Peter May The Lewis Man (Lewis Trilogy, #2) by Peter May The Chessmen (Lewis Trilogy, #3) by Peter May

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisxsil) Hi Marie,
Thanks for that, I have seen this trilogy before, but not read as of yet, so thanks for reminding me of them, now also added to my list!

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments Hi Lisa,
And you've probably read the Hamish Macbeth series??? Death of a Gossip Death of a Gossip (Hamish Macbeth, #1) by M.C. Beaton
the comedy-drama series was based on it!

message 10: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Craig | 6 comments Showing off a wee bit here, as my One Sweet Moment is on this literary map of Edinburgh compiled by Edinburgh City Libraries: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msi...

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments You should be blasting your trumpet, Maggie - you've written loads! And all authentic Scottish!
(Damn' Rebel Bitches: The Women of the '45

We Scots are useless at self promotion! Wha's like us??

message 12: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Craig | 6 comments Och, I know, it's so much easier to promote other people!

message 13: by Marie (new)

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments It's great you're officially on the map - along with RL Stevenson, Scott, Ian Rankin.
Well done that lass!

Maggie Craig | 6 comments Elevated company indeed! Thanks, Marie.

message 15: by Alison (new)

Alison | 1 comments Hi, I've just joined this group. Didn't realise there was a Scottish Goodreads group till now! I'm Alison and I am interested in Scottish literary fiction, anything from And the Land Lay Still to Lanark and Sunset Song.

A.D. Scott is my favorite mystery writer! Beverly Cochran wrote 2 mysteries that were quite good, set in the highlands. But might be a bit hard to find. The Housekeeper and The Visit. Also The Truth of Stone by David Shaw MacKenzie. Check out Cecilia Peartree too.

message 17: by Maggie (new)

Maggie Craig | 6 comments Alison, I love Sunset Song. A unique book.

Ann, I've been trying to think of contemporary mysteries set in the Highlands, apart from the Hamish Macbeth series. Shall have to put my thinking cap on. Shall check out your recommendations Peggy. I love a good mystery too.

Another great timeslip mystery is Kingdom of Shadows by Barbara Erskine.

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments If you like timeslip why not try Anna Belfrage's series: set in 17th century Scotland with a contemporary heroine:
The Prodigal Son (Graham Saga #3) by Anna Belfrage
Like Chaff in the Wind (The Graham Saga #2) by Anna Belfrage
A Rip in the Veil (The Graham Saga #1) by Anna Belfrage

message 22: by Marie (new)

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments It will keep you out of mischief Ann - That's some list! Usual suspects but Loads I've never heard of - mostly contemporary,
Even John Irving is there with Until I find You!!

message 23: by Marie (new)

Marie Macpherson (goodreadscommarie_macpherson) | 12 comments Didn't notice if Gillian Galbraith was there. Her Alice Rice series set in Edinburgh gives a great flavour of the city.

Patricia Prather | 3 comments Anne Cleeves' Shetland mysteries are wonderful—there are five in total. The first one is "Raven Black".

message 28: by Adele (new)

Adele (harukoraharu) Hi, I'm Adele from Cambridge, though born in Lerwick, Shetland Isles. It's been interesting seeing home portrayed in the BBC adaptation of Ann Cleeve's novels, plan to read some when enough time has passed. Not been there for a few years (long story). Usually read a mix of crime fiction, classics and try to fit in some Scots authors, currently up to book 10 of Iain Banks

message 29: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Prather | 3 comments Hi, Adele— I'm in the US. We're usually a season behind the UK when it comes to BBC TV. I'll definitely watch them if PBS picks them up!
