Suitable for a 12 year old?

If he read the mortal instruments they should be fine for him. the language is a little tough to get by though. I am thirteen and I loved them. However there is some innuendo, in a few of them, and if you are not comfortable with your son reading that I would not recommend this series.
It should be fine if he is mature - I read them when I was 10 and I was fine! :)
Probably. There is mild profanity, some romance, and as long as your kid isn't homophobic he ought to be good ;)
The language is not a problem, but the writing style is pretty bad in my mind and while it preaches tolerance the way the author does it suggests rather the opposite. Plus the main character... lets just say I would not trust him with a package of raw eggs.

That is one of the main problems with these stories. Magnus is about as trustworthy as a common thief and dumb as a rock but the books claim he is some sort of hero or trickster. So personally I would never recommend it to a 12 year old. I would rather recommend the Neverending story.
If he' read The Mortal Instruments series then this is definitely fine for him. If he's read TMI then hopefully he'll really enjoy this.

I knew several people who liked Magnus from TMI, even if they liked nothing else in it, but here they hated him. And I cannot blame them.
This is suitable for a 12 year old, especially if he reads a lot. I know I used to read middle grade fantasy books, and than, when I was about 10 or so, I began reading YA, and I was fine with the content in it, so it should be fine.
I read it when I was 12 or thirteen. The song might be a little bit inappropriate for boys that age though.
You mean the butt song? Also if that is the element of these stories that you consider inappropriate, you know instead of its rampant misogyny, stereotyping and abusive relationship material, then I really think your priorities are screwed.

Honestly, dumber than a rock? Sure he is a bit immuture but on multiple occasions through out the entire mortal instruments he saves everyones life? Come on now. At 300 years old, wouldn't you want to do some stupid things? Live your life rather than sit at home and judge what your child can and can't read about? Rather than ask if he can read a couple swear words and about gays? Soon he will be in High school where all that and more will be up close and personal... You can't buffer him forever.... plus if a thirteen year old can read it why not

For one thing, how do you know how old Magnus is? Clare has him lying about his age all the time. Sure the last book of TBC had him state in his thoughts that he is 300 years old but COHF afterwards claims he is almost 400.
That Magnus saves anyone is not due to competence but rather due to the fact that for the most part that he is a convenient magical queer, a plot device for the main straight characters who are even white by mainstream American media standards.
Plus how often does he actually "save everyone's life?" He didn't do in in TMI nor TID. At best he did it in TBC and this is were his stupidity comes into play the most. In TMI we already had the problem e.g. why he levitates a truck over the river instead of using a boat. But when reading TID, which happens before TMI remember, we see him using teleportation spells, among other things, which were never shown in TMI. Plus his skintone is suddenly different and his claimed parentage does not meet his TMI description. But TBC has the most examples of what a dumbass he is. There are several, but lets stick with some magical examples:
1) Knows there are vampires in Paris but doesn't think of having a glamour that works on them and instead of levitating out of there on some carpet or so while being concealed he instead uses some balloon from across the city.
2) He cannot magically stop a monkey in Peru.
3) Instead of teleporting to the Hotel Dumort or flying there in the 1929 story, he runs there by foot, even though time is of the essence.
4) Instead of lulling the werewolf to sleep or using his magic "net" and calming her down right away or simply have her hover in the air he throws a fireball at her first, which should have seriously burned her due to the highly inflammable fur.
5) In the 1989 story he wonders whether he might have killed that one guy. He is that old and doesn't know how strong he is?
6) He uses a healing spell on one of Raphael's victims but not on the boy being the victim of that other vampire because he allegedly knows no spell to replace blood? Then why use that healing spell?
7) Why not plunch the Circle into darkness right away and/or teleport the trapped werewolves out of there?
And this is just a short list on dumb ways of using, or not using, magic. There is much more. And even more examples of dumb behavior, like his appointment with his client or his dealings with Raphael or how long he needs to figure out that the vampires are on drugs, as well as those showing what a despicable person he is, like how he deals with Alec during their relationship and at their first date or how he treats Camille and the reason why he doesn't associate with drug users. Want more? Because I could give you tons more of examples that show that Magnus is written dumb as a rock and like a judgmental and self-obsessed asshole.
