message 2: by John (new)

John (johnred) | 364 comments I'd like to nominate Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell...I'm pretty sure it has been nominated once or twice times but never picked yet :)

message 3: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I did nominate it once but it did not win :-) So I second yours.

As for my nomination, I will try to push for The Luminaries. I know I proposed it as a buddy read, but so far only you, John, who wants to read it as a buddy read. So hopefully, if it wins, we can read it as a group, and if it does not we can do a buddy read together.

Now what I actually want to read is a fantasy or even hard-core sci-fi series. I am just tossing this ideas into the cauldron of discussion, hoping that there will be enough members who want to read the whole series. I know the group read Book 1 of the Game of Thrones, but then four more were published and still two more to come, but there are plenty of complete series there that can be read by sci-fi fans or by fantasy fans that are complete and very, very chunky.

Just an idea, guys!

message 4: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) OOPS! I made a mistake! The Once and Future King was our CLASSIC read! So this is a Classic Nomination thread.

Sorry John and Zulfiya! Please feel free to nominate a classic though!

message 5: by Becky (new)

Becky I would like to nominate Ivanhoe by Walter Scott

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I would like to nominate Moby Dick by Herman Melville

message 8: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Guys, do not forget that we extended the definition of our classic read, so any influential book of the twentieth century can be nominated.

I am nominating The Man Without Qualities.

And my idea about some fantasy series or sci-fi series is still valid. If anyone wants to do something like that, please PM me.

message 9: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Contemporary is mainstream, but classic is an influential work of literature.

message 10: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) If this is the Classic thread, then I nominate Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset. I've been trying to get a group for ages to read it, lol!

message 11: by Zulfiya (last edited Apr 07, 2014 12:31PM) (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Sandra, there was a typo, and Kristi already corrected this mistake, so please guys, read the whole thread.

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) Lisa wrote: "The Brothers Karamazov"

It looks like this has already been read, if you check above on the bookshelf.

message 13: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 105 comments Thanks Sandra.
I'll probably go with the flow then:-)

I would like to second Kristin Lavransdatter.

Kristi (kristicoleman) For some classic ideas please see our threads here:

Western Classic Canon
Modern Classic List

We have been working on compiling these for use in nominations. For this round of classic we can pick from rather time frame.

Lisa, this has already been read by the group, could you nominate another book please?

message 20: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) What happened to book 5 of The once and future king? I'm still interested in rreading the book and discussing it here.

message 21: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Iselin wrote: "What happened to book 5 of The once and future king? I'm still interested in rreading the book and discussing it here."

I believe we decided to read book 5 as a side read if there was ample interest, as it wasn't in everyone's copy.

message 22: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Oh good, I had forgotten ;)

John (johnred) | 364 comments Zulfiya wrote: "Now what I actually want to read is a fantasy or even hard-core sci-fi series"

Zulfiya, I will respond to this in the Buddy Reads thread to keep from sidetracking the nominations!

Lyndi (mibookobsession) (mibookobsession) I second Ivanhoe by Walter Scott. It's been on my TBR list for awhile, and I'd love to read in a group to see what everyone thinks.

Linda | 1425 comments Iselin wrote: "What happened to book 5 of The once and future king? I'm still interested in rreading the book and discussing it here."

I plan on reading book 5 right after I finish TOaFK if you want to do it as a buddy read. I already have the book ready and waiting.

message 26: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments Zulfiya wrote: "I am nominating The Man Without Qualities."

1774 pages?! I didn't think any book here was going to beat Les Mis in length. :)

message 27: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Oh, Linda. The group should always justify its name :-)

Linda | 1425 comments Zulfiya wrote: "Oh, Linda. The group should always justify its name :-)"

Ha ha! Well, I'm not daunted by the length - I simply noticed it. :)

Everyman | 885 comments Linda wrote: "1774 pages?! I didn't think any book here was going to beat Les Mis in length. :) )"

Gibbon's Decline and Fall would do it. Not that I'm nominating it. At least not yet.

Or the complete Remembrance of Times Past. Not that I'm nominating it yet, either.

But if anybody were minded to nominate either, I might vote for them.

message 30: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Come on, Everyman, you should definitely nominate one of those massive door stoppers.

If you do not nominate A la recherche du temps perdu, who will?

I have already nominated mine, so it is your turn.

I definitely want to read it :)

message 32: by Dianne (new)

Dianne (deemitchell) I am new here, and would like to nominate don Quixote to the list. I can't work out how to make it a link though, can anyone explain for me?

Lyndi (mibookobsession) (mibookobsession) Dee wrote: "I am new here, and would like to nominate don Quixote to the list. I can't work out how to make it a link though, can anyone explain for me?"
Click the link for "add book/author" right above the comment box, then type in the book title and search. Then just click the add button next to the book cover. You can choose to add a link or the book cover.

message 34: by John (new)

John (johnred) | 364 comments OK, I'm going to nominate The Magus by John Fowles, although it may derail my reading schedule for the summer :D

Just above the Comment window (where you type to post a comment) is a link that says "add book/author" click there, type in book, click add. for author, click over to the "Author" tab in the same window.

John (johnred) | 364 comments Everyman wrote: "the complete Remembrance of Times Past"
Hmm, I wonder how long the reading schedule would be for that? :)

OK - I just looked this up and now I'm intrigued. Finishing 4211 pages would definitely feel like an accomplishment! I'm also wondering, like John, what the reading schedule would look like for this one. :)

The reading schedule would be roughly 84 weeks long so a bit more than a year and a half.

message 42: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Heinzman (vasandra) Which book is 4211 pages long??

message 43: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments Sandra wrote: "Which book is 4211 pages long??"

In Search of Lost Time

message 44: by Delmy (last edited Apr 08, 2014 11:15AM) (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) I haven't been doing too well, i start books and get distracted by something else! BUT i would like to nominate--> The Mysteries of Udolpho

message 45: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (tewks) I have read the first four books of In Search of Lost Time and they are great, but the narrator is irritating and I am taking a short break from him.

message 46: by Mekki (new)

Mekki | 1 comments I'd like to nominate Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak.

I joined in with a group that read Proust over the whole of last year. It worked out to about 12 pages a day. I loved doing it that way. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

That looks like it would have been a fun project! Thanks for the link, Rosemary.

But then I would feel obligated to read it, and I'm not sure I'm up to that this summer.
