"Chains" is compelling historical fiction that takes place in New York City during the Revolutionary War. As a reader, witnessing the treatment of two slave girls at the hand of their mistress's nephew, and their new mistress might bring forward the issues of the day: racism, classism, and war. It's always interesting to go back in time and learn about aspects of the setting and events, but when you can correlate them with police brutality, rejected refugees and unbridled materialism, a book can be more of an experience for a young person. Isabel helps the Americans, feeds soldiers in jail, and nearly gets herself killed. There are two more books in this trilogy of her life, in which I hope to find she is free.
