Boricua (boricuareviews) | 27 comments Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die, #1) by Danielle Paige

Here we are in the final chapters where we find Amy breaking into the Scarecrow's lab and recusing Maude (Ollie sister) and risking everything. Which this to me was a fatal mistake. The monkey wasn't the Orders mission and she should of left that to Ollie and his group called the wingless (I think).

Jellia by this time is looking, smelling and doing much better. The Tin Woodman and his goons are tearing up the palace trying to find the traitor who help Maude escape and suspects Amy/Astrid of not being as innocent as she seems. Jellia helps her a lot within these chapters and I had started to realize that she was INDEED her handler (the inside person for the order).

Star leads Amy to a huge living hedge maze where we find Oz......I mean Pete ;-) waiting for her in the center. Apparently the maze will play a pretty big part in the upcoming books considering Glinda nor Dorothy will enter it out of fear of being forever lost within.

WARNING, THE NEXT FEW PARTS REALLY PISSED ME OFF:

Jellia, my dear Jellia. She ends up taking the blame for Amy rescuing Maude. In a public viewing that was meant to be her execution the Lion BITES OFF her arm and eats it.... -_- (It was so, so sad). The Scarecrow ends up coming between Jellia and the Lion telling Dorothy he has much worse plans for Jellia then a fast painful death. :-(

NOX IS BACK! and he informs us that they are very disappoint with Amy and that she has damn near destroyed there plans because of Jellia being an important person that could not be replaced. He tells them that they plan on carring out the attack on Dorothy the next day at her party and leaves.

THIS B*T*H!!!! is all I have to say about what they did to Jellia. I was so mad and sick to my stomach at the same time that I had to put the book down to collect my emotions before continuing on. They torture her and took her eyes out and beat her to death. Then they brung her dead body back to life just to parade it around the party to serve drinks...WTF!!!

The Order turns the magic off and Amy goes after Dorothy in her chambers. Amy you my dear...TALK TOO MUCH...why didn't you just stab her in the back? Why must you always talk your way out of the moment? Then you get to the top of the palace and instead of just running up to her and finishing her off, you decide to listen to her to while you inch your way to her.:-/

This of course buys Dorothy enough time for the Tin Woodman to save her. Amy tackles Dorothy and they both fall over the balcony and as they are falling they get their magic back and Dorothy vanishes never to be heard from in this book again. Amy on the other hand is saved by Ollie and Maude. They take her to the Wizard and Pete (who actually turns out to be Ozma) which I figured that out a few chapters before.

The Wizard explains that there's another way to kill Dorothy but she has to first remove the Tin Man's heart. Steal the Scarecrow's brain. Take the Lion's courage and then DOROTHY MUST DIE! Then the Tin man is zapped to their location by Glinda where he is killed by Amy and his heart is taken. The Wizard battles Glinda as Ollie and Maude takes Amy and Ozma to safety. Book ends..... :-(.

Well ladies and gents those were my LONG thoughts and recap of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is definitely one of the best books of the year thus far. Can wait for the next book (which is an entire year away O_O). 5 out of 5 stars hands down. Hope you enjoyed as well.

Highly Recommended.

Amazing. Thanks to all of the Moderators for creating this group, and for encouraging us to read this book!

Bryana Thomas (bryanathomas6918) Can't get over how ozma is Pete! I am still so confused about that though. and for some reason I do not trust the order at all!! they are no where to be found when Amy really needs them!

Belinda (belthelilbookowl) | 3 comments It was amazing. I love the plot twists and the characters. I love this version of Dorothy, the brat who has everyone revolving around her. Can't wait for the sequel. Thanks to all the amazing booktubers who came together and organized this. Looking forward to more of such read-alongs:)

Jess (jesssssssssssss) I was so excited towards the end, loving the plot twists, getting to see more of this new Dorothy in action, but was disappointed in the extreme speed and suddenness of the very end. I feel like the author has thrown another hundred pages into about ten. But I can't wait for the next one! : )

Tori-Lynn (victorialynnwriter) | 2 comments What a twist! The end of this novel was so good, and so action packed. My mind is still spinning from reading those last few chapters!

Katie (katieshuffle) This book was hands down my favorite book so far this year. The ending was so so so good! I feel slightly bad for the Tin Man for loving someone not capable of love, but then again Tin Man got what was coming to him. Also I felt beyond horrible for what happened to Jellial, but I totally guessed right that she was the one looking out for Amy in the palace. The whole thing with Pete I did not see coming though I thought he was going to end up being one of the witches's son or something not Ozma in disguise. Lastly, Nox is totally my new book bf just saying.
Here's my video review with more of my thoughts on this book! =)

Andrea (wiccanangel12) I loved the ending to this book, and I can't wait to read the next one!
Danielle did a good job of keeping me on my toes about who Amy could and could not trust while inside the palace, and when I discovered the Jellial was Any handler, I was shocked. I had a couple of guesses, but I had never expected it to be her!

Why must the next book take so long to come out!!!

I did a book review with my full thought:

Divya (itsdivya) Hold up! So the wizard said that there's a certain method to killing Dorothy which only he knew about therefore the whole Order thing was kind of, dare I say, pointless because Amy wouldn't have been able to properly kill Dorothy had she just stabbed her. Is that what the Wizard meant? And wait, so Pete is Ozma?!??!:!:::! I loved this book but dear god did it frustrate me how no one told Amy full plans and truths and kept leaving and secrecy and siiiiiigggghhh. I loved the book overall though. I cannot wait for the next one! 4.5 or 4 /5

•。✧ ellen ✧。• (eldrasil) What an ending! I twist was great, although you kind of knew it coming because it'll be two more books in the series, but I really loved how she wrapped everthing up

I figured out the Pete/Ozma thing pretty early though, and I think it was great, I really hope we see more of Ozma not being a complete wierdo in the next books!

I can't wait for the second book. This was definitely one of the best books I've read this year, a solid 5/5 stars.

message 13: by Gothie (new)

Gothie BioVenom (gotherellabiovenom) I hated the end.
It wasn't a well paced twist, it was just :the order is wrong, you can't kill her until blah blah blah and hey look here he comes now."

I hated what they did to Jelia, it was horrible, but I don't understand why Amy wouldn't use that anger, that gusto to stab her and be done with that. I was hoping that she would use all the horrible things she saw firsthand as fuel, not listen to what she had to say. Yeah, Dorothy relies on magic, but she charmed her way to that spot in the first place.

I had kinda pegged that Pete wasn't an actual person, I had been thinking he was some sort of separated part of Dorothy. Him turning out to be Ozma? It doesn't quite make sense.

Looking forward to the next book though.
I gave it a four out of 5 stars, just because of that abrupt ending and twist.

message 14: by Gwendolyn (new)

Gwendolyn I personally gave it 3 stars but I'm leaning towards 4. It was a great book with plenty of plot twists and character development, Oz scenery etc but there were also a lot of things that bugged me.
First I did not know before reading that this was part of a trilogy or whatever. I thought it was a stand alone book. However, even with knowing there is more to come I do not think this book has enough to stand alone as complete.
There were far too many chapters devoted to character development for the same characters over and over. I would have loved more back story on each of The Order witches (if they would have been in the book more). More about Pete/Ozma (which I just find odd -period). More back story on Jellia, and Nox. I got really tired of hearing how terrible Amy had it back in Kansas. I think that we all got that from the first few chapters.
For all the time spent with the Order just to be told by the Wizard their plan wouldn't work anyways. I don't know there's just so much left to be explored.
The ending felt rushed. Lots of action though.
I still plan to read the follow ups to the story.

message 15: by Justine (new)

Justine | 4 comments Oh my goodness! Ozma is Pete! What a twist! I knew Pete was not Pete, but I didn't think that would be the outcome. I do think there is an actual character named Pete. Ozma is probably the one who summoned Amy to Oz.

I originally thought the Wizard was the handler, but then when Jellia took Amy back to her room after it was ransacked, I knew she had to be the one. She was so nice to Amy or she was probably just very loyal to the Order. I still hate the Lion and the Scarecrow for what they did to Jellia. I hope there's some kind of magic that could get her back to normal.

I guess the only thing that pissed me off was that Amy didn't kill Dorothy. That was probably implied since there is two more books to this series, but she had two awesome opportunities to kill Dorothy and she didn't. I take back what I wrote in the other discussion about the Wizard being a good guy. I don't think he is anymore after that ending. I'm back to not trusting anyone, even Nox. I think Dorothy will die in the next book. Then Mombi or the Wizard will take over and they will be just as bad as Dorothy.

All in all, I really enjoyed this! I'm quite thankful for this read along because I would've never read this book if it weren't for this. Now I'm super excited for the sequel :)

Nicole-Marie Hughes (nicolemariexd) | 4 comments I really enjoyed this book, thanks to everyone who created this read along beacause I probably wouldn't have read it otherwise.

I was not expecting Pete to be Ozma and even though I shouldn't I actually feel sorry for the Tin Woodman.

The only problem I can think of that I have with this book is that I felt the ending was kind of rushed but even so I gave it 5 stars 'cause despite the rush it was an amazing book. And I can't wait for the next one.

message 17: by Molly (new)

Molly (augustwatersismyinfinity) | 1 comments Woah! The ending was quite a shock! And I went into this thinking there was only one book so I was pleasantly surprised. I give this about 4.5 stars because I think it was rushed a bit at times.

message 18: by Vanessa (last edited May 17, 2014 04:14PM) (new)

Vanessa The ending of the book was a little irritating. Well, more like Amy pissed me off.

She had the perfect opportunity to kill Dorothy and she squandered it. Ugh! But I guess it's moot point because Amy needs to take care of the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Lion in order to weaken Dorothy enough to kill her.

Nox of course pissed me off again blaming Amy for everything going wrong. I need Amy to just punch him in the face.

Pete as Ozma oddly makes sense. Though now I'm not sure what the hell was up with the scene with Amy and Ozma in the kitchens. I'm real confused about that situation.

So I am going to go ahead an assume that the Wizard is one of the "good" guys since he is working with Ozma who is the rightful ruler of Oz, and isn't it that point to get her back her throne? Though Ozma and the Wizard both tell Amy not to trust them.

This trust situation in Oz is out of hand. I feel so desperate for Amy. She truly has no one but Star, her rat, and even that's questionable.

Jellia. Holy crap Jellia. I have no words.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because I have had such an emotional reaction to this book. I felt completely desolate for Amy not having anyone she can trust, and I have a seething hared of Dorothy. I am utterly infuriated with Nox, and totally flummoxed over the motives of the Ozian players.
