The juxtaposition of the comic-type drawings and serious topic of Bipolar disease works very well in this book. Ellen is having crushing mood swings until she finally finds the right mix of medications to keep her stable. The journey from denial and worry about "loss of creativity" to balance and acceptance is very readable. This book would be great for someone who wants to understand this condition. I've heard young people talk about others being "bipolar", but clearly not having any real idea what this means. The experiences Ellen has range the gamut from being balled up in a fetal position to full-blown mania...and most teenagers can understand these moods in themselves, possibly, and others. For any person, there are points of comparison and then there is humor and learning in "Marbles" -- pretty good reasons to read, if you ask me.
