Here is my review that I posted:I'm giving this 5 stars because I've been recommending this book to people and I only do that when I really like the book. In chapter 1 we meet Malorie, who is living alone with her two young children in a house that is filthy, they have no food and the windows are boarded up & covered. By the end of the chapter she and her children escape from this house. If that's not enough to grab you, they all leave the house....... blindfolded. That was it, I was in.
The book was such an easy read that before you know it you've breezed through 50 pages. I liked that the story was different than anything I've read and definitely scary. I've read quite a few horror books but for some reason this one made me want to read it the same way I watch a scary movie......between my fingers. Lol! There were moments that I felt too scared to read on but what choice did I have. It's a book. I had to.
I guess this is Malerman's debut novel so I'm really hoping it's not his last. I think this is a great read but what I do tell people when I recommend it is not to read it before you go to sleep. :)

Well said!
The "birth chapter" has to be one of the most harrowing things I have ever read - and I mean EVER!

The part with the umbilical cord................ick.
I gotta say Matthew, this was a good pick and definitely not one I would've stumbled upon on my own! This is why I joined this book club: to read and be exposed to things I normally wouldn't. Definitely recommending this to other people.I wanted more thriller, chiller type. The scenes that had it (Tom and Jules missing for a day, then a week; fetching the water/feeding the birds; the birth scene; the encounter with the man on the river) were great and chilled me to the bone. I suppose the spacing of these scenes helped calm the reader down so that their emotions would be on high alert the next time.
The worst (and by worst part, I mean bone-chilling): the birth scene. The fact Gary never actually touched her, it makes my skin crawl just writing this. That he would intimately whisper in her ear and then back off.......*shiver*. I think it would have been less creepy if he had actually touched her.

Having been there for the birth of my two kids, I cannot imagine! It raised my tension during this scene tenfold!

Well take it from a woman who's had a kid lol.............being so vulnerable ................too scary

Yes - I think this book would probably have a different effect on someone who has been through childbirth.

And I think it speaks to the extent of madness within his character. I really felt like that whole scene was the most creepy and nerve-racking nightmare I could imagine.
Here's my review of Bird BoxIt was sooooo refreshing after the last couple books I slogged through. Good pick!

Glad to hear! I sometimes need a good book like this to clean my palate, too!

5 stars--I loved this book. It was a pretty intense read from start to finish. The author was brilliant in building suspense slowly...to the point I had dread for all the characters. It seemed like there was no way to read a happy ending. Was I right or wrong? You'll have to read to find out. There were blood stains in Malorie's house. The description was haunting and gave me chills down my spine. Something bad had happened there. I thought Malorie and Tom's friendship was cute. Their scenes were my favorite in the book.
My favorite lines: 1) "You're a bad mother, she thinks." 2) "The world, it seems, is unnaturally quiet."
3) "It feels like Gary is everywhere outside. He's been banished. Ostracized. Cast out."
There was a crazy scene--birds in a tree were killing each other. Dead parts fell in the river, fell on some of the characters. That image stayed with me long after I finished the book. The author did a great job of creating memorable moments in a world with few resources, with characters keeping their eyes closed for safety.
I loved the ending! It brought a tear to my eye.
I RECOMMEND this book to read.
Nice review, Yawatta!
There are definitely scenes from this book that will stick with me for awhile.
