What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

I am looking for a novel which is about an American film critic tracing a disappeared horror film director (first name Max ?). After several misleads the critic is getting kidnapped by a secret society and ends on an island where the aforementioned film director lives since years. I read this book in the early 2000s . Please be so kind and help me to find either the the book title or the author's name. Thanks !

Thanks a lot. I thought that too, but unfortunately it is not the book I mean. Maybe it helps that the name of the author sounds eastern european, when my old brain does not deceive me. Sigh
