Cardboard by Doug TenNapel is an extremely creative and unique story because unlike most other fairy tales, this story consists of a financially poor family receiving a magical cardboard box, which soon turns out to be destructive when it falls into the wrong hands. It is a very insightful book which includes adventure, drama, and a special kind of friend all in one; and throughout the book, many people learn valuable life lessons and life-changing secrets.
Firstly, the main problem and subject of Cardboard is a large card board box. The father acquires the box for Cam’s birthday from a weird man who works at a small shop. “Gideon, this is an empty box,” the father said; but then Gideon insisted that “It’s full of ideas..projects…adventure!” (Page 12). When the son and father build the cardboard boxer man out of the box, the boxer comes alive. This is an incredibly creative twist to the story which causes many problems and conflicts, and is different from most other stories. When the father inquires to Gideon about the cardboard, Gideon admits that “They (alien parts) merged into the walls of the cardboard shipping boxes.” (Page 92) This is, yet again, another creative twist.
Additionally, not only is there a weird case of conflict, there is also romantic drama. Since the father’s wife has died, another woman has been taking interest in him. She is extremely kind and caring, but the father is reluctant to get over his wife. When she makes him dinner, he says “Wait. I’m sorry. I didn’t want to give you the impression that…” and she interrupts his by shrieking that “I’m not the one having personal problems from the past! She’s gone-and I’m alive!’ (Page 110). This book has drama mixed in with all the other plots and the is definitely unique from any other book.
Lastly, the problem begins when Marcus, a rich, evil and spoiled boy, steals the cardboard maker from Cam. He uses it to make hundreds of huge cardboard creatures that have various features, which he eventually loses control of. There creatures make chaos in the neighborhood. “Holy Moly! Marcus has lost control of his own house!’ (Page 160). The creatures tear up Marcus’s house and make a huge underground cavern. The plot is insightful and complex and different from any other story. The climax escalates when Cam and Marcus are thrown into the underground cavern and develop a friendship slowly, and save each other lives.
For the conclusion; the cardboard world is destroyed by rain, Bill perishes but is reincarnated as William, Marcus makes friends with Cam, Cams father finds a job by rebuilding Marcus’ house. The ending is original, unpredictable and unique. It is amazingly different from other stories; I would definitely recommend the book to any reader.

I liked it.

(Not much compared to hers... -3-)
