Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Hi please give your nominations for the June 2014 poll.

Please read the rules on the separate June thread and stick to them. Any problems and your nomination will not count.

This will stay open until 18th or until a list of eight books have been nominated properly and seconded. Thanks.

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) | 117 comments Herald of the Storm by Richard Ford. I've read it, would be very interested to see other people's take on it.

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Thanks Mark. First book nominated properly as requested and found acceptable! Second noted.

message 5: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. Fantastic airship pirate novel.

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Aaron wrote: "Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. Fantastic airship pirate novel."

Hi this book comes back mainly as steampunk sci fi however it also is classed as fantasy so I will confer with the other mods and decide if it is suitable should it be seconded.
Thankyou.

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Gadfly wrote: "I nominate Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente"

Also acceptable.

message 9: by Aaron (new)

Aaron Ha! How's this book NOT a fantasy? It's in a made up world and one of the main characters has a magic golden tooth! :-)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Aaron wrote: "Ha! How's this book NOT a fantasy? It's in a made up world and one of the main characters has a magic golden tooth! :-)"

We usually go on what the main classification is on goodreads. One mans fantasy is another mans scifi and we do not read scifi in this group. However as I said this book has mixed classification so if it gets seconded I will decide on its eligibility.

message 11: by Darren (new)

Darren I'd like to nominate The Many-Coloured Land.

message 12: by carol. (new)

carol. I read Retribution and enjoyed it quite a bit. I filed it as 'steampunk,' but truly, I don't think it is--I've sense shelved the 3rd book as fantasy. It has golems powered by Daemons (which are spirits), a fierce hive-mind 'race' that takes over bodies of those it kills, and non-Earth cultures (sort of Victorian, but not really) in a non-Earth setting. I think I called it "steampunk" because of the technology level, but it isn't, really.

message 13: by John (new)

John Stefani I'd like to nominate Words of Radiance

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll nominate Dead Things by Stephen Blackmore

Dead Things (Eric Carter #1) by Stephen Blackmoore

message 15: by Kim (new)

Kim (kim_richards) I'd like to nominate The Messiah of Darkness

by Bill Taube
eBook ISBN: 9781629291130
Print ISBN: 9781629291147

Amidst the Norman invasion of medieval England, a young thief, a suicidal knight, and a princess in waiting must defend mankind from a demon who commands an army of the risen dead. God must rely upon earthly trinity to confront an evil spawned by Her wrath. The course of history is forever changed by the Battle of Hastings where The Messiah of Darkness raises ten thousand slain knights from their graves in its quest to reign over the world.

There are supernatural elements, historical elements and more.

message 16: by Michele (new)

Michele I'll nominate The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass. It's the first book in a 6 book series. Epic fantasy. I've only read the first 3, they are really good.

I'll second Many-Coloured Land, but it is also probably considered scifi with a fantasy feel.

message 17: by Emmett (new)

Emmett (emmett13) Sea Dragon Heir by Storm Constantine, anyone? Sea dragons, ocean-related magic, and incest sounds like a fun time to me. :P

For what its worth: Imo that books is steampunky in nature (though nothing actually uses steam-tech, so it's not really), but has very little to do with sci-fi. It has a completely made up fantasy world, golems, enchanted swords, demon summoning, ...
It really is a second world fantasy (of the sword and sorcery variety) that just takes place in a later era than the typical medieval fantasy.

You can consider this post a second. :)

message 19: by Mike (new)

Mike Wilson I would like to nominate A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan.

You, dear reader, continue at your own risk. It is not for the faint of heart—no more so than the study of dragons itself. But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon’s presence, even for the briefest of moments—even at the risk of one’s life—is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten. . . .

message 20: by Bill (last edited Apr 15, 2014 05:26PM) (new)

Bill | 337 comments I'll nominate The Northern Sunrise by Rob J. Hayes. It is a steampunk thief standalone novel. I really enjoyed Hayes's Ties That Bind series and am excited to read this one.

message 21: by Blake (new)

Blake Schreckhise I second words of radiance.

message 22: by Aaron (new)

Aaron I'll second The Northern Sunrise

message 23: by Kelila (new)

Kelila Gadfly wrote: "I nominate Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente"

Yeah! I love Valente's work, but I haven't managed to read this one yet.

message 24: by Kimberly (last edited Apr 15, 2014 09:34PM) (new)

Kimberly I'll nominate Lord of the White Hell a renaissance fantasy.

message 25: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (dward526) Ron wrote: "I'll nominate Dead Things by Stephen Blackmore

Dead Things (Eric Carter #1) by Stephen Blackmoore"

Seconded Dead Things. I have been meaning to pick this up as a 'quick read' (less then 300 pages)

message 26: by Gadfly (new)

Gadfly (gad-fly) Kelila wrote: "Gadfly wrote: "I nominate Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente"

This one might be her best! :)

message 27: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 220 comments I nominate A Warrior's Journey by Paul B. Thompson. It's set in the Dragonlance world, but no knowledge of the setting is required (at least for me it was a great read prior to any other DG book); it's the first book of a standalone trilogy.

Since Herald of the Storm has already been seconded, I second The Wayfarer Redemption.

message 28: by Sadie (new)

Sadie I'll second A Natural History of Dragons: a memoir by Lady Trent.

message 29: by Paul (new)

Paul Emmerson I would like to nominate 'The Left Hand if God' by Paul Hoffman

message 30: by Andreea (new)

Andreea Irina (andreeairina) Aaron wrote: "Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. Fantastic airship pirate novel."

I second this book.

message 31: by Paul (new)

Paul Emmerson Can I also second 'A Warriors Journey'

message 32: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Darren wrote: "I'd like to nominate The Many-Coloured Land."

This is scifi first, fantasy second. As a result it will not be counted. SO I am being fair Retribution Falls will also not be counted. Please check the classification on goodreads and if fantasy is not the top one then do not nominate. I am not wasting time arguing. If you want to read scifi then go to a scifi group. Thanks.

message 33: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments There is insufficient info for Messiah of Darkness and no link so it will not count.

This is not widely enough available. Not on kindle in Uk nor is the paperback cheap or easy to obtain.

message 35: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Paul wrote: "I would like to nominate 'The Left Hand if God' by Paul Hoffman"

Then please link it.

message 36: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments As you can see many of you are still not reading the guidlines before nominating which causes me a lot of uneeded work and makes me unpopular. Plus I am still receiving messages with nominations too!
So far books correctly nominated and seconded are as follows:

Herald of the storm
Words of radiance
The Northern sunrise
Deathless
Dead things
Natural histoy of dragons.......

give me four more please before we go to poll. Fantasy not Ya or scifi.....

Really?? I'm astounded 0_0. Pity because it is great, and no YA. I'll change my nomination then.

message 38: by Daniel (last edited Apr 16, 2014 07:40AM) (new)

Daniel (dward526) I nominate Green Rider, a traditional epic fantasy I have been meaning to read

Something I wanted to read for a long time: A Cavern of Black Ice.

message 45: by Bev (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Plenty of nominations but not many seconds.

message 46: by Alissa (last edited Apr 16, 2014 08:10AM) (new)

Alissa | 220 comments I nominate The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski. @Bev, I'm sorry, this time I contributed to add to your work myself, and I read the rules -_-

message 47: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (dward526) I will second A Cavern of Black Ice I read it last month and enjoyed it. I would recommended it.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Seconded to The Last Wish.

message 49: by Bev (last edited Apr 16, 2014 08:10AM) (new)

Bev (greenginger) | 744 comments Malice, Heroes die and A cavern of black ice and ship of magic all acceptable.

message 50: by Aaron (last edited Apr 16, 2014 08:39AM) (new)

Aaron Also, have you ruled out Retribution Falls? I didn't see it on your list despite all the magic and demons and golems and magic swords and all that good stuff. Hell, writing it all out makes me wonder what kind of crap do I read!?

The best crap, that's what.
