June 2014 nominations
Herald of the Storm by Richard Ford. I've read it, would be very interested to see other people's take on it.

Aaron wrote: "Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. Fantastic airship pirate novel."Hi this book comes back mainly as steampunk sci fi however it also is classed as fantasy so I will confer with the other mods and decide if it is suitable should it be seconded.
Thankyou.
Ha! How's this book NOT a fantasy? It's in a made up world and one of the main characters has a magic golden tooth! :-)
Aaron wrote: "Ha! How's this book NOT a fantasy? It's in a made up world and one of the main characters has a magic golden tooth! :-)"We usually go on what the main classification is on goodreads. One mans fantasy is another mans scifi and we do not read scifi in this group. However as I said this book has mixed classification so if it gets seconded I will decide on its eligibility.
I read Retribution and enjoyed it quite a bit. I filed it as 'steampunk,' but truly, I don't think it is--I've sense shelved the 3rd book as fantasy. It has golems powered by Daemons (which are spirits), a fierce hive-mind 'race' that takes over bodies of those it kills, and non-Earth cultures (sort of Victorian, but not really) in a non-Earth setting. I think I called it "steampunk" because of the technology level, but it isn't, really.
I'd like to nominate The Messiah of Darknessby Bill Taube
eBook ISBN: 9781629291130
Print ISBN: 9781629291147
Amidst the Norman invasion of medieval England, a young thief, a suicidal knight, and a princess in waiting must defend mankind from a demon who commands an army of the risen dead. God must rely upon earthly trinity to confront an evil spawned by Her wrath. The course of history is forever changed by the Battle of Hastings where The Messiah of Darkness raises ten thousand slain knights from their graves in its quest to reign over the world.
There are supernatural elements, historical elements and more.
I'll nominate The Wayfarer Redemption by Sara Douglass. It's the first book in a 6 book series. Epic fantasy. I've only read the first 3, they are really good. I'll second Many-Coloured Land, but it is also probably considered scifi with a fantasy feel.
Sea Dragon Heir by Storm Constantine, anyone? Sea dragons, ocean-related magic, and incest sounds like a fun time to me. :P

For what its worth: Imo that books is steampunky in nature (though nothing actually uses steam-tech, so it's not really), but has very little to do with sci-fi. It has a completely made up fantasy world, golems, enchanted swords, demon summoning, ...
It really is a second world fantasy (of the sword and sorcery variety) that just takes place in a later era than the typical medieval fantasy.
You can consider this post a second. :)
I would like to nominate A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. You, dear reader, continue at your own risk. It is not for the faint of heart—no more so than the study of dragons itself. But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon’s presence, even for the briefest of moments—even at the risk of one’s life—is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten. . . .
I'll nominate The Northern Sunrise by Rob J. Hayes. It is a steampunk thief standalone novel. I really enjoyed Hayes's Ties That Bind series and am excited to read this one.
Gadfly wrote: "I nominate Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente"Yeah! I love Valente's work, but I haven't managed to read this one yet.
Ron wrote: "I'll nominate Dead Things by Stephen Blackmore
"Seconded Dead Things. I have been meaning to pick this up as a 'quick read' (less then 300 pages)
Kelila wrote: "Gadfly wrote: "I nominate Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente"Yeah! I love Valente's work, but I haven't managed to read this one yet."
This one might be her best! :)
I nominate A Warrior's Journey by Paul B. Thompson. It's set in the Dragonlance world, but no knowledge of the setting is required (at least for me it was a great read prior to any other DG book); it's the first book of a standalone trilogy.Since Herald of the Storm has already been seconded, I second The Wayfarer Redemption.
Aaron wrote: "Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding. Fantastic airship pirate novel."I second this book.
Darren wrote: "I'd like to nominate The Many-Coloured Land."This is scifi first, fantasy second. As a result it will not be counted. SO I am being fair Retribution Falls will also not be counted. Please check the classification on goodreads and if fantasy is not the top one then do not nominate. I am not wasting time arguing. If you want to read scifi then go to a scifi group. Thanks.

As you can see many of you are still not reading the guidlines before nominating which causes me a lot of uneeded work and makes me unpopular. Plus I am still receiving messages with nominations too!So far books correctly nominated and seconded are as follows:
Herald of the storm
Words of radiance
The Northern sunrise
Deathless
Dead things
Natural histoy of dragons.......
give me four more please before we go to poll. Fantasy not Ya or scifi.....
Bev wrote: "This is not widely enough available. Not on kindle in Uk nor is the paperback cheap or easy to obtain."Really?? I'm astounded 0_0. Pity because it is great, and no YA. I'll change my nomination then.
