Ariel is kind to others no matter what their circumstances. She has a fascination with the world and often goes off to find artifacts that she displays in her room. Ariel is often rebellious, wandering off on her own to explore her surroundings, and frequently disobeys the orders of her father or Sebastian, causing herself to get in trouble. She also is incredibly curious, and her curiosity often leads her into dangerous situations. But Ariel is an independent and determined young lady. She spends her days singing, daydreaming, and adventuring with Sebastian and Flounder.

Ariel is the youngest and seventh daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena. She is often seen in the company of Flounder, her best friend which is a fish, and Sebastian, who is a crab, her father's advisor who is often assigned to keep an eye on her. But that doesn't stop Ariel from having fun. Ever since she was a little girl Ariel would sneak out from the kingdom and visit the human world. She would watch ships sail by, or if she was close to land she watch the humans, being dissatisfied with underwater life. With her best friend Flounder, Ariel collects human artifacts and goes to the surface of the ocean to visit Scuttle the seagull, who offers very inaccurate knowledge of human culture. She ignores the warnings of her father King Triton, the ruler of Atlantica, and his adviser and court composer Sebastian that contact between merpeople and humans is forbidden.

She would take flounder along so she wouldn't be alone. Ariel, along with her older sisters, grew up in a castle under the water. Both her parents were deeply in love and shared a special song called Athena's song. He even gifted her a music box on their anniversary for her love for music. The Queen was noted for her singing talent and her love of music. She and Triton had been the best of friends ever since their childhood. Unfortunately, she died as a result of a run-in with a big pirate ship when Ariel was very young. A statue of her dancing with Triton is present in his courtyard.

Athena's death leaves Triton completely devastated. As a result, he tosses the music box in the ocean, bans music from the kingdom, forbids contact with the land above, and raises his daughters very strictly. However, Ariel and her sisters inherited their mother's love of and talent for music. When she learns of the Catfish Club, she sings a song remembering her mother and her love for music. But that was soon discovered which was taken away along with her collection.

Unable to handle how her father is strict and wanting to be free, Arial runs away. She goes to the sea witch for help, and thanks to her she was granted legs in exchange of her soul. As long as Arial does what she's told she keeps her legs, plus she was able to have flounder changed into a dog.

After that Arial went to land in a new world she's never seen before, one that was many seas away from home. She knows no one, and only has flounder to keep her company. She's come to land for a second chance to happiness, for more adventures, but mostly for true love.
