((Savanha)) I don't think that is was supposed to mean that all men treat women as objects, just the men in the Mormon setting of the book. I personally thought it was disgusting and almost animalistic for men to treat women as property. The women were very passive and weak within the patriarchy of their community. As a feminists it was upsetting for me to see the women not having equal rights, and portrayed as babies who need to be taken care of instead of strong females. Even if men view women as property, it does not justify their reasons for abusing their wife. These men abused their wives to instill fear and to assert their dominance.
