Rain of Gold by Victor Villaseñor. I used to read it every year (along with the LOTR series) until it got lost in a move or someone borrow it and didn't return it. So good!

Cathedral of the Sea by Ildefonso Falcones would be one of mine. It had that hauntingly beautiful feel to it. I'll have to look up Rain of Gold though!
