dear elaine,
i note that you are planning to walk the Camino with your daughter.
in 2011, i walked the Camino with my son Shivantha - and have just written a book about the experience entitled 'Strangers on the Camino' which was published as an eBook last week - see

The paperback edition is being published by VijithaYapa publications and is being launched on may 8th.
Please feel free to communicate with me at sanjiva.wijesinha@monash.edu

Stephen R. Marriott | 13 comments Dear Elaine et al

Firstly as a way of an introduction I walked The Camino two years ago to the week and so I was very happy to find this group; and by pure coincidence I've just published a piece on my Camino experience: Long Paces on 'The Road of Contemplation' on my blog:

http://stevescribble.com/

The journey as you can imagine was a big event in my life and gave me the confidence to try new things, including writing. As such Elaine I've just finished writing a novella, Candyfloss Guitar, a story which came to me during my pilgrimage - I hope to publish it within the next couple of months on Kindle - so hopefully you can review it then :)

I also wanted to say that I've taken a look at your wonderful website (now bookmarked) and I have to say it's truly inspiring and I loved the piece, Do Bucketlist Travelers Live Longer - what an amazing life transformation Dorothy has gone through, my kind of girl!

Hope you're having a fantastic day.

nice to hear from you, steve - and thanks for your friend request (which i have just accepted). i too believe that 'bucketlist' travellers DO live longer and have better quality lives - because they have something to look forward to, and something to inspire them to prepare and plan with a definite goal in mind.
best wishes,
sanjiva

message 7: by Stephen R. (new)

Stephen R. Marriott | 13 comments Sanjiva, nice to make your acquaintance and I agree regarding bucketlist travellers - the important thing of course is once the list has been made is to actually go and do/visit those places, as opposed it remaining a do list.
kind regards, Steve

Hi Jeffrey,
I'm sorry I didn't respond earlier. I got so busy with our new website and with Sanjiva's Camino book that I didn't get a chance to look at yours. My apologies. It just so happens my husband will be walking through Galicia in just about two more weeks. Do you have a .pdf or .mobi copy of your book? If you want to see the review of Sanjiva's book, you can go to our website: www.banxietyfree.com In fact, we are testing our author submissions page on the site, so if you would use it to start the process, your book will go in our cue for review. It typically takes me 1-2 weeks to review a book. Also, let me know if you are interested in doing an author interview.
Buen Camino!

Hi Steve,
How wonderful that you've become more creative from your pilgrimage. We must have walked the Camino the same year. We did ours in the fall. You are the first person to ask about having a non-Camino book reviewed, but I can't see why we shouldn't review it on our site since it is Camino-inspired. Thank you for your comments about our website. We worked hard to update the old one. There are still some glitches, but we're working on it.

I just told Jeffrey whose comment you can see above, that we are testing our author submissions page on the site, so if you would use it when you are ready to start the process, your book will go in our cue for review. It typically takes me 1-2 weeks to review a book. Also, let me know if you are interested in doing an author interview.
Buen Camino to you and Sanjiva and Jeffrey!

Sanjiva,
I can't leave you out of all this fun! I just realized that I haven't posted my review of your book on Goodreads. When I get home from work tonight I will cut and paste it to the Goodreads reviews.

Stephen R. Marriott | 13 comments Hi Elaine
Lovely to hear from you and how nice we walked the pilgrimage the same year, I walked it in June/July.

My novella, may be fiction but it's about a young flamenco Spanish guitar player reluctantly walking the Camino - and during the process he encounters some ghosts and begins a process of self awareness. I hope you enjoy it. As such, I will definitely send you a PDF, advance reader's copy (via your fantastic website) in the next couple of weeks. I'm just in the process of looking for a cover designer and learning about formatting for Kindle but I hope to make some progress soon! As such it probably makes sense that I do these things first before I ask you to review it. And thanks I'd love to do an interview as well :)

Have a fantastic W/E, Steve

dear steve, elaine and jeffrey,
this is nice - like sitting after the day's walk and having a chat with one's Companeros! Elaine, i like the new website - one suggestion, if i may, is to have the rotating pictures stay for a longer period before they change.
thanks for adding the interview with shivantha as well on banxietyfree.com - it reads well! i look forward to reading the interview with steve.

message 14: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Foster (majorabona) | 17 comments Thanks for the suggestion for website, Sanjiva. We will take your advice and let them scroll a little slower. I am also taking the book off the top banner so we have more space to describe the purpose of the site. I think it's more important than just having the picture of the book for growing our audience.
Steve, I know the editing and book cover process can be grueling but it is worth it. It can also be fun as you get suggestions for different covers to capture your work. I look forward to seeing it.
Any other feedback about the new site would be greatly appreciated. We really do want to use it to help others.

First of all, congratulations for your site.

I would be happy to send you the .mobi file. My book is a guidebook, not a novel, hopefully a bit different from the dozens of others out there. N interview sounds interesting, how would that work?

I will send once i get back to HQs, i'm just returning fron Galicia right now.

Hi Jeffrey,
It would be wonderful to get your guide to Galicia sooner rather than later because Joe will try to review it while ON THE CAMINO in Galicia :) He should be in Galicia in about one week. How's that for a realistic review? You can send the .mobi file to majorabona@aol.com

Elaine Foster (majorabona) | 17 comments Hi Stephen,
I was just cleaning out my mailbox. I'm sitting in a PAX terminal in Rota Spain with some time to kill and I realized I hadn't responded to this email. Did you ever receive a response from us at Banxietyfree.com?
If not, I am sorry. I was given a few books to review and it took me a while to catch up. I couldn't review a few of them because I could not offer a positive review. I don't like to give negative reviews so I just don't review the ones I can't give a thumbs up to on our site. At the same time, we try to give feedback to the authors who have taken the time to submit to us so they don't think we have ignored their requests.

I will be traveling for the next 6 weeks. But if you want to send me a copy of your book in kindle or .mobi I will take a look.

Welcome, Margaret. I hope you let us know if you find a particular Camino book worthy of mention. Sanjiva's was unique and informative for me. He is a physician and it is obvious he took the time to do his research before he went on the Camino.

Stephen R. Marriott | 13 comments Hi Elaine
Lucky you travelling for six weeks - you must be feeling good at the moment.
I didn't get a response from Banxietyfree.com and there wasn't an option to attach my manuscript. But not to worry, there's no rush. But how do I send you a copy in Kindle? I can email you the manuscript - if you email me separately with your email address. My email is: steve_maz2003@yahoo.co.uk
Safe travels

If you are still interested in reviewing Camino books. I've written one On the Primitive Way. It might be particularly relevant for your website because I walked with my younger brother before his death.

We were estranged due to addiction and imprisonment but the Camino brought us together after ten years of separation.

Please let me know.

Elaine Foster (majorabona) | 17 comments Hi Landon,
Your book sounds intriguing. I'm in the middle of a move right now so I won't have time to review it until I can get into my new apartment in Boston in January.

If you still want to have me review the book then, I'll be happy to take a look at it. I just don't think I can do it justice while I'm moving furniture, closing out files, etc.

Thanks for asking though and the subject material is definitely within our scheme of interests. Feel free to contact me again in January when I'll have little more flexibility. In fact, I was just admitted to a creative writing program through a Master's in Fine Arts so I should know even more about writing and reviewing come the new year.

Sincerely,
Elaine

Terry McHugh | 7 comments I walked the Camino in 2013, the first two weeks being with my youngest son. Shortly after he went home I gave up, beaten by the weather, loneliness and events at home. Encouraged by my family, I returned a couple of months later and finished my camino. You can find the whole story in my book 'Walk With The Sun Till Ur Shadow Disappears' available from Amazon. Some have asked why I used 'Ur' instead of 'Your'. The title was inspired by a slogan painted on a rest area wall just before Calzadilla on the road to Sahagun. Unfortunately, when I returned this year, the slogan had completely faded out
Just recently published a second book about my life post camino and then a return to the pigrimage two years later. 'I Have Walked 500 Miles'

Sue Kenney | 4 comments Hi. I first walked the Camino alone in the winter in 2001 when I was downsized from by corportate telecom career. I wrote a book called My Camino in 2004 which was recently translated into Spanish. Subsequently I walked the Portuguese Route in both directions and wrote my second book Confessions of a Pilgrim in 2007. Both books have been out for many years but at the time I wrote them, there were few books about the Camino. I'm curious about how they would be reviewed today, if you are at all interested.
With gratitude,
Sue

Hi Elaine, 'The Reign in Spain' was written by Galician author W. Kristjan Arnold. He has biked the Camino and has extensive knowledge of the pilgrimage. Let me know if you would like to contact him. By the way, his book is a fascinating look at the Royal family's struggle to bring democracy to 20th century Spain. Hope you read and recommend! Tom

Finding My Way: Autumn on the Camino Frances
A photographic account of the author's walk along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in northern Spain. With 212 full colour photographs, 36 daily route maps and an extensive personal narrative over 182 pages, the reader will gain an immersive feel for what it is like to walk the Camino Frances from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela, and then to the "end of the world" at Fisterra.

Elaine Foster (majorabona) | 17 comments I just checked it out on kindle, but the "Look Inside" function didn't work for me. You might want to see if anyone else had that problem. I have gone back to work since I wrote this request for books to review so I really only have time for the ones that I feel an interest in reading. Yours looks interesting as far as I could see with the chapter titles, but that's as far as I could get on the Amazon site.

Alastair Wilson | 16 comments Hi Elaine. I had my second Camino book published on Amazon in June of this year. It is called "SANTIAGO ON TWO FEET" and is available on Kindle and paperback. This is a slightly abridged version of my original book and the new book delivers more on the description of each days walk rather than including all the throw-backs to my earlier life that did present as I walked the wonderful Camino Frances in excellent weather and blister free in 2015.

Craig Smillie | 1 comments I've recently read Jane Christmas' "What The Psychic Told The Pilgrim" which was pretty well written, but I unfairly took against her because she did big chunks of the Frances by bus! More enjoyable was Mefo Philips' "Long Rider to Rome" about her 1400 mile ride of The Via Francigena. I believe she has also written one about her ride on The Frances from Canterbury to Santiago. She sounds like fun. I did The Frances from St Jean to Santiago in 2017 and the Portugues in 2018. We're planning to do The Frances again this winter since we did it in spring last time!

Stelleri | 6 comments I was put off by Jane Christmas's behavior toward the women she had traveling with her. I don't care how they behaved, she owed them basic courtesies like an honest conversation, but instead she weaseled out of it. I This cowardice was
unappealing.

Joy Llewellyn (joytl) | 3 comments Hi Elaine: I've recently published "Camino Maggie," about Maggie, a teenager who gets caught doing a B&E in her aunt's store. Her punishment is to hike 800km on the Santiago de Compostela trail with her aunt, a youth counsellor, and three other young offenders. The idea came from a comment my husband made when we were on our first Camino in 2011 (we've since done six). He had worked with Youth at Risk for years and said it would have been much better if he could have taken some of those kids on a Camino hike instead of seeing them experience a frightening and often future-scarring justice system. For Maggie, it became, "Who knows where betrayal, bedbugs, and blisters might lead her?"
