Fantasy book/series recommendations?

I love the Gentleman Bastards, especially Locke and Jean. Surprised that you are struggling as the world is vibrant and their friendship is a strong one.

The Darkness series by Harry Turtledove is always an escape for me, especially during the winter. It may not be what you are looking for but it is something a little different than all of these.

Top recommendation: Tales of the Ketty Jay. By far the most fun I've ever had while reading. It's like a hectic mixture of all the good points of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Pirates of the Caribbean. The first book is good, probably worth a 3.5/5; the sequels are incredible.

If you want something more character-based, take a look at Realm of the Elderlings, starting with the Farseer Trilogy, which has by far the best characterisation in the fantasy genre. If you enjoy them you'll end up feeling like the characters are real people, like old friends that you wish were around more often.

Since you like Sanderson, Powder Mage is definitely worth a look. Don't be put off by the fact that it's a flintlock fantasy; it's written by one of Sanderson's students, and it reads very much like one of his books.

Keep on with Gentleman Bastards. I struggled early on, but now it's one of my favorites series.

Try some of Raymond Feist's work. If you love books with strong friendship ties, you'll like Pug, Thomas, Arutha, Jimmy the Hand and the whole ConDoin family as well as all the later additions.
There's literally tons of reading in this series :-) starting with the Riftwar Saga (the Riftwar Cycle contains 31 books), the Empire Trilogy, the Serpentwar Saga ...

I would personally recommend the Malazan series (Steven Erikson) and the Black Company Series (Glen Cook) they both feature military companies which give you a great feeling of comradeship . Also a bit more juvenile but a great serie for me was the Deathgate cycle from Margaret Weis. At last I agree with the Powder Mage suggested by Raptori in which the influence of Sanderson is really obvious.

James Burton I agree with you. The Malazan series was recommended to me as well (after finishing Wheel of Time) and I could not relate to any of the characters at ...more

Try Tom Lloyd Twilight Reign.

I'd recommend the Cal Leandros Series by Rob Thurman. It's an urban fantasy series that revolves around two brothers. Their bond is amazing! Though not friendship, if you like strong bonds between characters, I think you might enjoy this series.

Try the Cycle of Arawn, if you are looking for the friendship angle specifically, Dante and Blays will fit the bill amlost certainly

Try The Expance by James S. A. Corey, the first book is Leviathan Wakes. I know they are not Fantasy but they are so dam good! I would call these book SiFi/Detective with a pinch of Horror, with some very strong charactors and they have that friendship bonds you like so much.

Did you read Lightbringer? It's way better than Night Angel, in my opinion.

Try Joe Abercrombie, "The First Law" Trilogy and other books in the same world.

Also, David Eddings with the series The Elenium. Read it very long time ago, but keep fond memories of it.

Might also try the The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. Malice is the first book.
