so this is about an african american woman who was married to a korean/asian man, who at first seemed liked the perfect guy but she slowly realizes that that was an illusion. she stays with him for a while out of fear and later gets pregnant. trying to avoid her child growing in that setting she divorces, she also gets a restraining order. out of vengeance the asian (still don't remember his ethnicity) man/ the ex husband tries to kill her. almost succeeds but is stopped by police. woman loses baby in struggle. **fast forward a few yrs** the woman lives a solitary life with few interactions. she decides to sign up for self defense classes because she never again wants to be so weak and helpless. meets the owner of a martial arts dojo/ tai kwon do/ tai chi (dont remember type of fighting style. point is that's it's for self defense) the owner of the place is caucasian? italian? honestly I don't remember his ethnicity either, although he is white. btw the story jumps from his to her pov. from the first time they meet, there is a spark. both have personal demons but they still gravitate towards each other. she starts competing representing his dojo against other ones. I think is around the time she is more independent, and happy again. and bam! ex abusive husband comes back into the picture!! he once again tries to kill her but is stopped by her new love, the dojo owner... thats as much as I remember

Burn by Crystal Hubbard?
Crystal, around what year did you read this book?
What's the woman's current job? What's about her ex?

You're welcome. It can be tricky guessing the right keywords that will work in a search (e.g., "self defense" wasn't working for me). I think used a Google search like:
site:www.goodreads.com "contemporary romance" "martial arts" abusive husband
