I expect a full report! That should be exciting.I liked The Day the Crayons Came Home but I'm not sure the art will merit a Caldecott. Red may have a better shot at getting it.

I see these two being front runners. I rated Ask Me higher than What Pet."I like Ask Me, it is a lovely book and a great conversation.
I am at the ALA Midwinter this Weekend. The awards are Monday morning at 0800. I will report back on Monday. I enjoying talking with the publisher reps and authors. Two of the new, 2016, books I liked are:
Cockatoo, Too
, written and illustrated by Bethanie Deeney Murguia, and
Freedom in Congo Square
, written by Carole Boston Weatherford , and illustrated by R. Gregory Christie. There were many, many good illustrated books and it is more complicated now with Caldecott selections of Graphic Novels (This One Summer, illustrated by Jillian Tamaki, written by Mariko Tamaki and published by First Second - Caldecott Honor) and ground breaking illustrated works (The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (Scholastic Press, an imprint of Scholastic - Caldecott Medal)
I am enjoying the story and illustrations in a 2016 book by Bloomsbury press,
The First Step: How One Girl Put Segregation on Trial
, written by Susan E. Goodman and illustrated by E.B. Lewis. This might be a contender for next year's awards. Follow the book link in this posting for my full review.

This was funny and a good summary of the live presentation.
Jerry Pinkney has received numerous awards including Caldecott Medal and Honors. This year he received the Coretta Scott King – Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award pays tribute to the quality and magnitude of beloved children’s author Virginia Hamilton. There is a digital tour of some of Jerry Pinkney's works organized by the Normal Rockwell Musuem

Here several videos where Jerry Pinkney talks about a specific work of his. The show was at the Phillidephia Museum of art and ran from June 28, 2013 to September 22, 2013.
This exhibition of drawings and watercolors by Jerry Pinkney (American, born 1939) presents an overview of the artist’s long and varied career as a designer and illustrator. Touching upon personal and cultural themes such as the African American experience, the wonders of classic literature, and the wisdom of wellloved folk tales, the works in this exhibition celebrate both small yet extraordinary moments as well as significant historical events, reflecting the transformative power of visual storytelling in our lives. Pinkney’s luminous illustrations include work from such classic picture books as The Patchwork Quilt (1985); John Henry (1994); Minty, A Story of Young Harriet Tubman (1996); Black Cowboy, Wild Horses: A True Story (1998); The Old African (2005); and Sweethearts of Rhythm (2009).

Thanks to friend who called me that this was going to be on today. The radioboston.org has some great resource material on Fannie Lou Hamer. Fannie Lou Hamer is often called the spirit of the Civil Rights movement, who used singing to reflect her belief that the civil rights struggle was a spiritual one.Hamer ran for elective office three times, helped launch the Head Start preschool program and she co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus.

Any favorites or predictions for this years Caldecott Awards? The Awards will be announced on 8 Jan at the ALA midwinter conference in Boston. I think I will be going this year. If so, I will post right after the announcements are made. - Jack
