Hello everyone! February's topic is Not Another Love Story. What we mean by this is Non-Romantic books, or Romance Alternatives.

Why we chose it:
It's still seasonally relevant to Valentine's Day without interfering with other groups that might be doing the more traditional Romance topic and it offers a great alternative for people who aren't into Valentine's Day or the romance genre.

Help:
You can go the route of books with little to no romance at all. (There are way more than you'd think!) Or, if you can't think of those, you can choose to emphasize other types of relationships such as parent/child, siblings, friendships. (BUT - heads up that we are planning to have Friendships as its own theme in the next few months so if you choose to focus on friendships you will end up doing this topic twice.)

If you still need help, here is a list of genres to look within to get your creative juices going:
-horror
-mystery/detective
-mental illness, or illness/accident (often very internal stories)
-science fiction
-middle grade
-non fiction

Here are some specific examples:
Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet, #1) by Orson Scott Card The Giver (The Giver, #1) by Lois Lowry Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick The Hobbit (Middle-Earth Universe) by J.R.R. Tolkien The Maze Runner (Maze Runner, #1) by James Dashner The Queen of the Tearling (The Queen of the Tearling, #1) by Erika Johansen

Remember that the point here is not necessarily that the books have ZERO romance, but just to have an alternative for people looking for something other than romance.

We forsee this topic being difficult for some, but remember that there is no minimum amount of books you have to have. And remember that this group is designed to help you FIND recommendations as well as give them.

Don't forget to link to your posts once they go up in February over on the share page: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 7: by Janie (new)

Janie Johnson I should be able to handle this one well considering I am not a romance reader.

Nele (demoniqueshadow) | 9 comments Great topic!

I just realized that I have really few books with no or just a bit romance in it. Never realized this before since romance isn't really the thing I'm looking for in most books, so I'm really excited what books are there with no focus on romance!
