Before you read this book had you heard of “tunnel rats” and/or what they did?

Yes. I've read a few books about the Vietnam war and seen movies.

I had never heard of tunnel rats. My father refused to discuss his experiences in Vietnam. What I learned came from eavesdropping on his conversations with fellow vets.

I can understand your father's reluctance - war is hell.

I read a wonderful book in my teens which has a character whose a Tunnel Rat and I read at university. Both amazing books.

No, although I mentioned this book to my dad [who was that age between WWII and Korea, so he was not called up]. He seems to have known about the topic, perhaps from people his age and not Vietnam, although maybe he understood more than I did in the late 60s through the mid-70s.

I had never heard of them either but it sounds like it would have been terrifying. I can see why Harry still has nightmares about it.
