Leigh | 6291 comments It's that time again, ladies and gentlemen, the June Group Reads Nominations are now open. During the nomination period, each of us can nominate one(1) book. The person who nominated the book that garners the most votes will get a $10 gift card to either Amazon.com OR bn.com.

EDITED on May 15: Please head to message #77 in this thread to see the complete list of nominees for July.

Rules:

1. You CANNOT nominate your own work.
2. If you nominate a book, it is expected that you will lead the discussion for that book. Don't worry it is not hard and does not take up a lot of time.

This seems to be only available as a kindle ebook, is that correct? It's also a new release (11 April 2014)

message 7: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Barnes (scribbling_advocate) | 8 comments The Beauty of Murder and Never Look Back
The Beauty of Murder is a fascinating novel with a real twist in the story line that has time travel element. I have done a review already and it's short listed for a prize at this years crimefest.
Never Look Back is a debut for author Clare Donoghue. It's a great plot and interesting characters. If you like police procedurals then it's a good read.

message 10: by Briar (last edited Apr 29, 2014 07:39PM) (new)

Briar (lycangrrl) Ok, this is my first time posting here so I'm a bit nervous, but I thought I'd come out of the woodwork to nominate this book Carved in Darkness. It took me a bit to get going on this book because the first chapter was actiony and threw you right into a murder but then it slowed down to modern day and regular life stuff which kinda halted it. But after a few more chapters (which are many and short) it picked back up and I couldn't put it down and it had a great twist at the end. Another recommendation I would make is Cover of Snow. I loved this book a lot. It is a bit slow at the beginning but well worth it once you get into it.

(Also, both books are available in paperback and as ebooks, and Cover of Snow is in hardback as well.)

Chava | 2788 comments The Treatment (Jack Caffery, #2) by Mo Hayder

The Goodreads blurb:
Midsummer, and in an unassuming house on a quiet residential street on the edge of Brockwell Park in south London, a husband and wife are discovered. Badly dehydrated, they've been bound and beaten, the husband is close to death. But worse is to come: their young son is missing.

When DI Jack Caffery of the Met's AMIT squad is called in to investigate, the similarities to events in his own past make it impossible for him to view this new crime with the necessary detachment. And as Jack digs deeper, as he attempts to hold his own life together in the face of ever more disturbing revelations about both the past and the present, the real nightmare begins...

Hi Brynn,
Thanks for coming out of the wood works :) and for your recommendations. However, we only get to nominate 1 book at a time. Which of your 2 nominations has your preference?
Cheers,

message 17: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 3645 comments I've just discovered the Jack Frost books, televised as "A Touch of Frost". I nominate the first book in the series A Touch Of Frost. I've only read the sixth (and sadly the last) in the series so far.

message 18: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 3645 comments It's the only role I've ever seen him in so to me, he is Frost. But the actor who plays DCI Banks (don't know his name) is not the same as I had pictured from the books.

I love it when we get these lists, so many more books to add to my TBR list. So timely with autumn (fall for you Americans) being in swing here in Australia. Nothing is nicer than curling up with a good book while it's pouring outside :)

Chava | 2788 comments Lucy wrote: "My nomination is Eragon by Christopher Paolini"

Hi Lucy,
Sounds like a nice book for the Sci-Fi/ Fantasy groups, but this is mysteries, thrillers and that sort of stuff. This book doesn't fit our criteria. Is there maybe another book you want to nominate?
Tnx

Lucy (mesdupmoi) | 635 comments Oh sorry, I didnt check. Hmmmmmmm.

How about Rose Madder - its a suspense/thriller?

Any book from this series is a good one to read. I seem to have some catching up to do on the series....

message 32: by Shruthi (new)

Shruthi (shruthi98) | 3 comments hello,

this is the first time iam posting in this group. I would like to nominate THE BOOK THIEF by MARKUS ZUSAK. I love the characters in this book and the author is really innovative too. even though it is not much of a thriller there is some factor which keeps you glued to the book.

message 33: by Kay (new)

Kay Faupel | 1028 comments Disappointed but I'll save my nominations for next month

message 35: by Kay (new)

Kay Faupel | 1028 comments My nomination is a nonfiction spy thriller:"Washington's Spies: the story of America's first spy ring" by Andrew Rose.
It's the inspiration for the current series "TURN" on AMC.

Louise (stressmagnet) Skin Game
I really really have an embarrassing weakness for Jim Butcher's books. Not high art, by any means, but entertaining.

Do I have to start this series from the first book, or it doesn't matter if I pick Skin Game immediatlely?

message 39: by Louise (new)

Louise (stressmagnet) Thanks for re linking. Bad eyes and old age. I think Butcher does a good job of recapping in his books usually, so I don't see why this wouldn't be the same. Good point though.
