Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments OK, so I'm in the middle of a library book so can't really get started on this until I finish that. I am going to start The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which I picked up because my daughter was reading it. I'm going to tackle this over the coming year.

Good luck on the removal of Mt. TBR. Mine is never ending. ;)

message 4: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Mine too. It will be a very minuscule dent but at least it will be a start. The trick will be to not add to the mountain.

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Still finishing up a couple of library books but have a few of my books in the queue. I think the first one will be The White Magic Five and Dime which will also count toward the 2016 Reading Challenge.

message 8: by Kate (new)

Kate | 16 comments LOVE that title! Why didn't I think of that, since I have a mountain of TBR books threatening to fall over & kill me!

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments @Kate, remove one rock, add two more. I think I'm going in the wrong direction.

Oh we are kindred souls Teresa! I try so hard to fight that urge, but the magpie syndrome catches me out every time! (magpie syndrome = oooo! shiny! I want it!)

LOL Magpie syndrome. I'm there with the both of you. I've added a bunch of books I want to read. Good gravy, it never ends! :D

So far I've read 13 books I own and the same amount of library books! Crazy!

Teresa- Good luck to you with your mountain removal program! Also, I hope you enjoy Last Train to Istanbul, Ready Player One and The Snow Child. I plan to read Ready Player One in February. :-)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Lisa Ann, I've had several people I work with recommend that one to me so I picked it up.

message 17: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Ugh, I picked the wrong book from my collection to start with. A Stainless Steel Trio. It's ok enough to keep going but I'm not racing to pick it up either. Its taking a long time to get that first book down in the climb.

message 18: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Wow, I didn't think I'd be into February before I added my first book for this challenge. Finally finished A Stainless Steel Trio. If this had been my first exposure to the series I definitely wouldn't be going any further. I never felt like I got to know the main character, Jim, at all. It just went from one action sequence to the next with only a cursory look at motivation and emotional reactions to events. Considering these are the first three books in the series time-wise I expected to see some growth but Jim was the same from start to finish. I'll give The Stainless Steel Rat a try because I remember enjoying it and then decide if I want to read the remainder of the series.

I picked up The Stainless Steel Rat a long time ago--tried it, but never finished it. It's still lurking on the piles somewhere....

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Book 2 went much faster. I'm reading the Gaslight series and just finished Murder in Little Italy. The whole series is a nice quick read. I love reading about the era and what life was like back then almost more than the mysteries themselves.

I really enjoy the Victoria Thompson series. She gets the period and atmosphere just right.

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Third book out of my TBR list down. Streetlights Like Fireworks also fulfilled the book about a trip portion of the 2016 Reading Challenge group. At this point I've read a total of 8 books, 3 of which I own, so 37% of the books I've read have come off of the mountain.

message 23: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Been awhile but another book has come off. The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor. I got this series for my son because he's a huge Walking Dead fan. I decided I needed to read it too. On par with the television series (I haven't read the graphic novels). It's more about the human condition and the restructuring of self and society than the zombies. Not too subtly, it makes you question who the real monsters are.

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments The group read of Don Quixote has slowed everything down but I've managed to add book #5. I enjoyed The Secret Garden but as it was obviously written for younger children it didn't have the depth to the plot and characters that I enjoy. I loved all of the Yorkshire spoken though. It reminded me of all the thick accents I would hear when watching All Creatures Great and Small growing up.

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Book #6 was a big one. The Don Quixote group read is now finished. Really enjoyed this one.

That looks pretty daunting! Good luck!

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments Thanks. I'm hoping that seeing a chapter get crossed off each week will give me the incentive to keep going until the end. So far I'm finding it very interesting.

message 30: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Bergholz (moonblink39) | 56 comments So I think I've bit off more than I chew with the boulder I'm trying to shift from my mountain right now. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is taking way more time per chapter than I thought it would and I've been tempted to leave it for the year and tackle other books in my TBR list. I'm finding it very interesting however. I wasn't aware of all the political maneuvering by Hitler and others before the war. In fact I was completely uninformed of the goings on between World Wars. The author's voice is somewhat judgmental based on hindsight but considering the time it was written and his first hand experiences it is not unexpected. I will likely keep going and try a more balanced list for next year.
