This is the thread for discussion of the Prologue and Chapters 1 - 9 (inclusive) of Mage's Blood. Feel free to discuss all the chapters up to this point but please do not leave any spoilers for other sections of the book!

What do you think of the concept so far?
How was the prologue?
What do you think of the characters?
Which one do you like most so far?

Ungar5 | 25 comments i think i should go and thank David Hair personally because this seems like a book made specifically for me. politics, religion, crusades, revolts, magic... everything i love about fantasy.

while we havent seen too much in the political arena yet, it has great potential. two continents in a religious war (some realism in a fantasy is good), with smaller factions within each continent figting each other - i can see this going places...

another thing i like is that there is no unnecessary complexity in the terminology. the names of the months and week days are similar to ours but still different enough to have a fantastic feel (no ten week days, 15 month year etc - hate those). some of the religions, too, take a lot from real ones.

the magic is ok, nothing too fancy there. i do like how, in the prologue, she literally sucks the youth out of the baby. more of that please.

as far as characters go, im starting to like Elena, and Alarion has the makings of a good one too.

Elena is one of my favourite characters from this series and as it goes on and you see her develop I think she only grows. I also agree about the fact that the world isn't too dissimilar to ours and so has a fairly approachable set up for readers, but there is also the other elements of magic, politics and character which all add to it a lot :)
Looking forward to seeing more of your thoughts soon!!
