How many genres of romance are there?
historical romance: Pride and Prejudice
sci-fi romance - zillions
erotic sci-fi romance - Breeder
cozy mystery with romance - more zillions
contemporary romance - Robyn Carr
(those aren't my picks)
I'm being a bit silly. Having some level of male-female (or other combos) interaction adds spice to many tales, even if not explicitly a romance.

I may be an odd duck as a guy, Melissa, but 'what makes people tick' is almost a necessity for me in most books. While a suspense story with a good guy chasing a bad guy can be captivating, such a story with the added fillip of the tensions and attractions between two people, has the potential to be more enjoyable.
Plus, I grew up in the Betty Freidan and Our Bodies, Ourselves era. I have a mother, wife and daughter; I prefer women characters with what is now called agency to TSTL.

I agree with you,
I like having the extra background and "getting to know" a character. I have a harder time being invested in stories like mysteries that focus on the mystery but never a lot of information on the detectives.

I'm logging my last book, The Widows' Adventures as an adventure tale. I was initially going to go with realistic fiction, but decided that while the events in the story could happen, most of it was unlikely.
A student gave me a manga book to try out. I felt obligated to read it since they usually read my recommendations. Manga looks like it's a genre to itself and then manga splits into different sub-genres. All I know is I would have never picked up this book on my own, so I'm counting it here. So far, I'm not impressed, but I'm going to stick with it. lol
I have never read Manga but DeAnnah does sometimes, but she has specific stories she reads. I think it is a genre you either love or hate from the looks of it and from reading reviews of different things.
What book did they give you?

Well, this one was written by a video game design company, so it may be that some are better than others.
My tracking post, round one:
If I put down Pride and Prejudice as a classic, Persuasion as a romance, and Villette as an 'adventure', am I ignoring the spirit of the challenge? Yup, I though so. Can I use two of them, or do they all get thrown into the "classic" cubby?
Eventide of the Bear by Cherise Sinclair should be either paranormal or romance or some combo of the two.
E.G. Manetti's The Cartel: The Apprentice Volume 1 (not about the mafia or drugs) is a Sci-Fi romance.
Some open Genres:
Westerns
Crime
Suspense
History maybe Juliet Barker's Agincourt: Henry V and the Battle That Made England or Conquest
Historical Fiction probably a new book by Alison Morton
Biography How many hints to my wife will net me:Juliet Barker's revised: The Brontës
Religion/Spiritual
Contemporary Issues
Erotica

I wasn't sure about A Tale of Two Cities either when I listed it. Is Classic a genre? I mean, A Tale of Two Cities was historical fiction when it was originally written, so...
