How many books can you read that take place in a country outside of the United states or the country that you live in?

Choose your level:

Of course you can log your progress and the books you plan to read here. But here is the widget where you can also track your progress. Just remember to name your "shelf" and put your books under the shelf as you read them so that it will count towards your goal.

If any of you are reading half of a yellow sun with us remember to shelf this with your challenge so that you get credit on your widget for reading this.

How has everyone been doing on this challenge

I'm halfway to my platinum goal. I've read six books including ones from China, Morocco, Gambia, and Tanzania. I'm hoping to diversify a bit more for second half of my challenge since it almost feels like I'm mainly reading books from Africa most of the time. I'd like to explore more cultures I've never read about to meet my challenge goal b

message 13: by Maya (new)

Maya B | 825 comments Going good. I've been to Africa, Greece, Scotland, Rome, and England

It's seems like I've been sticking to Africa as well lol. Last years challenge I did a lot of Middle Eastern books. I need to go to some other areas as well.

message 15: by Maya (new)

Maya B | 825 comments I need to read another good book in Africa. I have only read one book so far. I am going to read one based in China this month

I'm about to start reading within the next week or two Beasts of No Nation which takes place in south Africa. I seen some of the movie on Netflix and it was pretty good. Hoping the book is just as good if not better.

I also want to read beasts of no nation. I hope to get to it soon. The movie was good

This may be a hard one on which is better as the movie is powerful and certainly captures the tone of the book.

I did the book first - so I will say the book :)

Will be curious which one you like better as you now know what happens and if you find the language as powerful and evocative as the movie.

Also I thought the book was set in an unnamed west African country.

If you like the child soldier storylines - I would recommend Song for Night by Chris Abani.
It is less than 200 pages but I thought it was one of the best of its kind.

Thanks Beverly! I will keep you posted on my thoughts. I definitely could be wrong about the setting. I've been reading all of these books in Africa they are starting to run together lol.

I read that one earlier this year. It hit me straight in the feels. I still have been able to watch the movie, but the book was definitely a must read.

I really loved The Kindness of Enemies - will be one of my fav books of this year. It really was a compelling story within a story.

Also loved Jade Dragon Mountain - was one of my favs from last year and I am looking forward to next book in the sequel - The White Mirror which will be released later this year.

I did, too, Beverly. They are excellent. I am hoping that The White Mirror stays on its publication schedule which, I think, was June. Jade Dragon Mountain was such a strong debut, her second should be a treat.
