The Odyssey is a play about the Greek story of a man named Odysseus. This story takes place ten years after the Trojan War and the fall of Troy. After Odysseus did not return home to Ithaca after the war he was presumed to be dead. As a result his palace was raided and overrun with suitors attempting to court Penelope. Also in this palace along with the suitors and Penelope is her son Telemachus. The suitors later plan to assassinate Telemachus because he is the only thing preventing them from completely taking over.
During this disaster with Penelope and her son back at home Odysseus is alive and well trapped on an island by a nymph name Calypso who is madly in love with him. While on his voyage many people become involved such as Athena who is his protector and Poseidon who is his rival and who holds a grudge over Odysseus blinding his son Polyphemus the Cyclops. Along with these adventures he encounters siren, rough storms, Cyclopes and much more. In the end he does get home and he realizes all these suitors and pursuing his wife and he plans to kill them all with Telemachus. The only one who originally recognizes Odysseus when he returns however is his dog Argus. He later reveals himself to everyone and they accept the fact that Odysseus was still alive.
