Oh I loved Handmaid's Tale and To Kill a Mockingbird. Of Mice and Men didn't work for me either. Here's some classics I have enjoyed: Gone with the Wind, One Hundred Years of Solitude, the Hunchback of Notre Dame. As for stuff like Dickens and Austen I'd recommend Bleak House and Pride and Prejudice (obviously). Jane Eyre is lovely too but it took me a second reading to really get into it. I'd warn you to stay away from the Count of Monte Cristo, I found it really boring. Robinson Crusoe too.
The only "classic" that I liked (if you use that as a word for the standard list English language books) was the Picture of Dorian Grey. And Alice in Wonderland, I see that one on a lot of lists too.Non English books:
A book I can really recommend is The Discovery of Heaven . I loved that one so much. The end (last 2 pages) are meh but the rest is really good.
And of cours The Diary of a Young Girl . I read this when I was 8 or 9 and haven't re-read since but it's so well known I guess it still is a good read for adults too.

Thanks! Especially for the warnings about Crusoe and Count. :)

I'm a fan of gothic writers myself... I detest Jane Austen so very much.
I also really enjoy the Bronte sisters' works.
The Count of Monte Cristo is amazing. Except for the shitty ending ever but everything before is great.
Again One Hundred Years of Solicitude (and basically everything Gabriel García Márquez wrote).
Don Quixote of the mancha
Brave New World
The Aleph and Other Stories
Lolita
Doña Bárbara
Wuthering Heights
Frankenstein
The Name of the Rose
The House of the Spirits
