What are your first impressions of this book?

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "What are your first impressions of this book?"

LT McGill reminds me of another character of Walter Mosley; Easy Rawlins. I've completed the book (had it on audio) and long drives to work allows me to enjoy a good story.

He's real knowledgeable of the streets and he knows or can slightly foresee what will happen in the future.

I love Walter Mosley books. They're easy to read, straight from the hip and mind of the author and relates to issues within the community without a lot of sex but lots of danger.

What do you think of Leonid?

Lethea: I like your comment about WM, and totally agree with the take on community, sex and danger.
I am going to see about getting my copy this week.

Sure. I will post the request for suggestions soon. Sorry about this month. I was having technical difficulties. For some reason I could not see anything that was posted to the group.

Carolyn Alleyne | 75 comments As we start a new year, most people look over the past year and try to figure out what they need to do better/different. This book speaks to how it can be hard to change your past especially when everyone knows you as one way. I just reached the middle and so far i really like this one. It really is keeping me guessing. And LT's son is a whole 'nother story in itself, what is he up to? hmmmmmm...

Yeah, I cannot wait to find out what is going on with him.

What do you think of LT's relationship with his wife?

His past does seem to keep coming up throughout the book. Do you think that it is possible to ever really escape your past?

For those who have read other Walter Mosley's books, How does LT compare as a detective to Easy Rawlins?

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "For those who have read other Walter Mosley's books, How does LT compare as a detective to Easy Rawlins?"

Easy is a smooth operator just Like LT. The differences between them is their age and Easy understands when a relationship has ran its course. Easy and LT both have a killer as a partner; Easy has mouse and LT has Hush.....funny names but tough characters. If LT wasn't older than Easy, I would think they're brothers.

You may not escape it but have to face it head on in order to get past it

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "What do you think of LT's relationship with his wife?"

That relationship has sailed. As he stated, they both have done wrong in that relationship. His wife left him for another man and then returns home after the other man left the country and hopes for things to be all good between them. Plus two of the kids she had is not his biologically.

I don't think you ever escape your past, you can certainly pretend to forget about it but you can never escape it.

Talk about a lack of trust, that defines their relationship. And we all know that once you lose trust in a relationship, there's hardly anything left.

Trust is a misguided situation.....

I thought that they had a very interesting relationship. I don't think that I would be able to stay in that type of relationship.

Yeah, I agree. That is something that you can never really recover from.

What did you think of the ending? Were you left with unanswered questions? Were you surprised by what happened?

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "What did you think of the ending? Were you left with unanswered questions? Were you surprised by what happened?"

The ending was okay with me. I do believe that he should have killed Thompson but that's just my opinion. I had no questions left from the story. I was pissed that no one would pay for being the manipulator to all the killings. Instead they go to the sanitarium.

LT was really trying to turn over a new leaf. Yeah, I thought that was interesting. That they were able to get off by going back into the sanitarium. I expected LT to not let them get away with that since they tried to kill him. I guess he felt that he had been compensated enough.

What do you think of Twill and the situation that he gets involved in?

Denise | 1410 comments Mod
What did you think of the author's writing style?

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "What do you think of Twill and the situation that he gets involved in?"

Twill has a good heart but a con man's game. He's a good friend to have but he also has an old man's soul. I like him but not sure if I wanted him to be my child.

Mahoghani 23 (mahoghani23) Denise wrote: "What did you think of the author's writing style?"

I have been reading Walter Mosley for years. His writing style is a easy flow to follow. It leads you through passages of life that really happened and we the readers are experiencing it for the first time.

Denise | 1410 comments Mod
Do you think that the title fit the book?

I agree. You would need to keep an eye on him all the time.

Carmen Lang | 29 comments Just got a chance to start the book. Didn't grab me right away, but it's getting better. Leonid definitely reminds me of Easy Rawlins. A man with his own unique code of honor involved in less than unhonorable situations.

It kinda starts slow but the action picks up. Walter Mosley books I like to listen through audiobook as I'm driving. Especially since it's a thirty minute ride to work.

Carmen Lang | 29 comments Denise wrote: "What do you think of LT's relationship with his wife?"

It's always sad to me when people are just going thru the motions, because they don't have the energy to end the relationship. The trust is gone, the love is gone. What's left?

Carmen Lang | 29 comments Lethea wrote: "Denise wrote: "What did you think of the ending? Were you left with unanswered questions? Were you surprised by what happened?"

The ending was somewhat anticlimactic. But, that's how real life can be. And I think Walter Moseley wanted the book to entertaining, but real. I really liked that was this was a gritty, urban book that didn't have all the excess of street lit.

His love for the children that he knew wasn't his.
