I do not know how I did not start a thread about this book sooner!!

This for me is the most accurate book to movie translation ever! The only complaint I have ever heard from anyone was that in the movie Stanley was not chubby in the beginning like he was in the book. But, Shia was like 13 at the time, so making him gain and loose weight would have been ridiculous!!

The whole time I was watching the movie the first time I would be about to mention that they forgot something or changed something...but then I would have to shut my mouth as they not only showed everything, but in a great way!! It was not in the same order as the book all the time, but it added to it for sure!!

Also, someone just donated the book to my work so I plan on re-reading it this weekend. The person also donated the book "Small Steps" that is a follow up to Holes that is about the character Armpit. I am for sure excited to take a look at this book now as well! :)

Rachel Holes was one of my favorite books growing up as a kid. I was thrilled that it was adapted into a film by Disney! I agree it was an amazing adaption from book to film, and is a wonderful book/film that should be shared with all generations. I gotta say that D-Tent rap song that was in the movie is pretty catchy.

The rap was my favorite part of the whole thing, even though I LOVE LOVE LOVED the whole movie! haha My friend and I were talking about the book yesterday and he said the movie was okay...but he wanted even more rap from the D-tent boys! I watched a thing on Disney channel that explained that the boys just made that up one day playing around and such, and then it became this huge hit! Super cool! :)

Rachel I think I remember seeing that on the Disney channel too! Oh the days when the Disney channel was actually good, and is now just pure cheese.

That sucks! :( I actually read the book in high school since a class I helped out in was reading it. Love it, and then just a few months ago found out there is a second book in the story! Can't wait to read those! Not sure when I will get to them since I have a whole stack of other books on my table right now, but one of these days... ;)

Louisa Knight | 156 comments Oh, I never knew there is more books after it! I'll have to read them and see if my opinion on holes changes again :)

Rachel What's the second book in the series called? I might have to read the first one again as a refreasher.

Small Steps (Holes, #2) by Louis Sachar

Someone donated some books to the library at work and I grabbed them to read before the kids rip them up and everything. They are sitting on my table with about 5 other books from work, and a whole pile a camper let me borrow! I need to just quit my job so I have time to read everything!! haha

Sophie (sophie_loves_books) | 7 comments Rachel the second follow on book is called Small Steps :)
I love Holes :D I was encouraged to read it my a woman who works in my school library and I loved it! Its one of those books that you can read no matter how old you are :)

Kyara | 158 comments Oh my god I forgot this book even existed, I have not read it since I was in year 7. Just a casual 7 years ago haha. I might have to re-read it before reading the ones following it that I didn't even know about!

I have both of them sitting ready to go, as soon as I finish the like 5 books I am in the middle or reading, and maybe also the 4 books someone from work let me borrow...and also the 3 books I got free from authors..... Not enough hours in the day.... haha

Kyara | 158 comments Hahaha just a few books you've got there! I know the feeling, can we have just a few extra hours in the day?? Maybe like ten... I'd be happy with that. It'd give me time to read the 30+ books sitting on my shelf un-read, oh god so much book guilt.

For sure!! Although Holes would make a quick summer read. Might need to do it next week in celebration of camp finally starting!! haha Sure....my camp is WAY better then Camp Green Lake, but it would be fun to read on my lunch hour each day! :)

I am in the middle of reading Small Steps, the second book in the series. I have to say, it is rather disappointing. Nothing like the first one, and not all that exciting. I wish they would have left the series alone, and made this book separate. It really had nothing to do with the first one, aside from giving us two peoples back story a little...

I could not wait until July started to read/watch Holes again, so I did so last week. I am still super amazing at how wonderful the film makers did at getting the feel of the book, the whole story, and even taking a first person story and making it work so well on screen!

As for Small Steps, the second book in the "series"....it was terrible! Nothing like the first one aside from having Armpit in it.... Not worth reading at all. I did not hate it, but really it was a separate book completely, not really a continuation of the story.... I'm glad they did not try to make it into a movie...it was have been awful!

Δ|вσω I read Holes for school. I enjoyed the plot. Also, it included a lot of OMG moments. For example, whenever the boys found that orange drink which turned out to be the oranges from those back flashes.

Peaches. And yes, this book does a great job of making everything come full circle without feeling forced! Likewise, the movie does a good job of conveying all of it!

Ariana | 28 comments I love Holes! The movie was good too, but there were a few differences from the book and the movie. The book is way better to me.

message 21: by Elisa (new)

Elisa | 10 comments The movie is really really accurate, there are some small details, f.e. that Mr. Pendanski always wears sun lotion on his nose. He always has a sun burn on the nose, in the book :)

Bookloverhugger aka:Rebecca | 155 comments i loved the movie! we did this in school (i think...)and i got the DVD

Rachel (booknerd1000) | 2 comments I love Holes! It is one of the most accurate versions of a book. I actually didn't sit and compare the book to the movie!

Ariana | 28 comments The only thing that really bothered me was that in the beginning of the book, Stanley was supposed to be fat. It wasn't like that in the movie.

That's one of the only complaints I have ever heard about the movie, even when it just came out and all that. But, the thing with that is Shia was like 13 at the time. It is unsafe to make someone of that age gain and lose weight that fast just for a role. I felt like it was understandable, all things considered! :)

Ariana | 28 comments I still absolutley LOVE this movie though. And the book!

Rachel Here is my review for Holes. I am so happy I read it again. I really enjoyed this book when I was a kid.

5 out of 5 stars

Holes is a wonderful story of friendship, and building of character. I really enjoyed the friendship between Stanley and Zero. I can see how this book was made into a movie, but I wished they would have stuck to what Caveman looked like. A great read, and I feel it would be a wonderful book to teach at 6th grade level.

This book was read aloud to us in public school, and I remember not really enjoying it. I thought the story lacked something, and the split plot was not my cup of tea.

message 29: by Kaylie (new)

Kaylie Du I started reading Holes, but then stopped. I'm still not sure whether or not I should pick it back up. Suggestions?

I think it is a GREAT book! I read it in high school after a teacher mentioned it and said it was a "kids book" that was good for all ages. I read it and was BLOWN AWAY!! It was a good year before the film, so as soon as they said they were making a movie I knew I NEEDED to see it!! Basically if you see the movie though, you are getting everything from the book! It was perfect!!!!

Dana (harmonyslovehp) | 72 comments That is one movie that hit the book spot on :)

Gladys Garcia I read the book and saw the movie. Both were great.

molaffle | 10 comments They're half, half. Book was okay. But the movie was okay. Not that good, but not that bad
