If anyone can recommend crime, mystery, horror, fantasy or historical (or historical fiction) set in Britain and dark I'm open to recommendations

Every one of those titles looks really interesting. I'll have to look at the book pages when I've got time.

I've found the Van der Kist and Sly books interesting. The Grim Almanacs are slower going. Olde London Punishments was good.

This book Deacon Brodie: A Double Life is about the real-life man behind the inspiration for RL Stevenson's Jekyll & Hyde.

Actually Deacon Brodie is quite the celebrity in Edinburgh. I remember sitting in Deacon Brodie's Tavern and enjoying a pint when we visited the Edinburgh Fringe back in 1985.
