I've found the Van der Kist and Sly books interesting. The Grim Almanacs are slower going. Olde London Punishments was good.

Actually Deacon Brodie is quite the celebrity in Edinburgh. I remember sitting in Deacon Brodie's Tavern and enjoying a pint when we visited the Edinburgh Fringe back in 1985.
