Grace The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
I personally thought that this started of well but slowly got tedious and dull. What did you think of it?
Check out my review on my 2016 Reading Challenge page! https://www.goodreads.com/user_challe...

Michelle Knox I as well. But the ending was pure adrenaline mixed magic. I read the follow up book the Glass Magician in the series, but have yet to read the Master Magician. But it is definitely on my reading list for 2016.

Grace I agree on that. I do want to read the sequels to see what happens.

Michelle Knox It was in my opinion an original story idea, so I am also curious to see how everything plays out in the next book.

Chris I read all three based on what I saw in the first one. I don't need a story to be perfect in every area, or to do what the genre is supposed to do for me to enjoy. That being said the whole trilogy was solidly written, with a well thought out magic system. The heroine toes the line of being annoying at times but all in all I liked her well enough.

Grace Just a reminder that this discussion is about the first book. I havn't read the other two, so please don't discuss it. Thank You.

Cody OP, I wholeheartedly agree. I think the protagonist went through duller and duller situations as I continued to read; but it ended in a fascinating manner. I read it as a Kindle single, and most likely won't continue the series as it doesn't suit my taste as much as I'd like. A little too much fantasy, and not enough of a hook to hold my interest.

Grace FYI everyone, I've made a group where we talk about Fantasy novels (mainly). I'm looking for members and good moderators. :)

...were the names changed or something? The main characters in the versions I have (purchased from Kindle) are named Ceony and Emery.

If so, holy crap spoiler much! I just started reading book 3 but there has not been any pregnancy. If she gets pregnant in book 3, why would you drop that spoiler in a discussion for book 1?! Poor form.

Michelle has gotten confused and posted information from, I would assume, 'A Discovery of Witches' and the rest of the series.

Yes, I believe so.

Hi Michelle! I think you may have gotten confused. We're talking about the book The Paper Magician, not A Discovery of Witches. =) Thank You!

Oh okay, I was super confused there for a second!

I just finished the third book in this series. They were enjoyable enough, but I don't feel like they quite lived up to their promise. It was such an intriguing concept and I had high hopes, but I found that there was a lot of awkward plot points (like Ceony's reckless decision making) that felt forced.

Courtney Hale I personally really enjoyed the series. The writing style was quaint, and I loved the characters. It's overall a very unique concept. The first book was definitely my favorite, but the other two were good too.

Jamie Dacyczyn For me, this was the worst book that I read (all the way through) so far this year. I really really wanted to like it, but when literally 90 pages are just the protagonist wandering around through a huge info-dump through her teacher's heart....Ugh. Just awful. She basically served no purpose for that half of the book except as a vessel for us to learn more about HIS past. We learn nothing about HER. What a waste of time.

I completely agree! :)

SSBSMS I finished this a while ago but I remember thinking it had a mellow feel to it. I read the books back to back and loved it because it pulled you in. I agree that the book has a slow feel to it. In a way, it really reminded me of the feel of Howl's Moving Castle. Did anyone else get that vibe?

I've tried to give this book two chances, and honestly, I don't know why. It's not like I hated it; it wasn't the most terrible thing I've ever read. But, I didn't like it either. I also didn't finish it. I was bored and disappointed, and the pacing felt off. What really disappointed me was the lack of world building. It was almost like Charlie Holmberg pushed everything aside to get to "the good parts", but the good parts never really came.

Truly a disappointment considering I still love the idea of it. If she ever revised it and published it again, I might give it a third chance.

BeckysBookshelf It did become a bit of a struggle i’ll admit. The world and magic system is unique, which is what drew me to it in the first place, but as the story went on I lost interest. The second book is currently gathering dust on my shelf- unsure as to whether I will pick it up or not.
