Nick had been altar boy for the older priest, still in residence. I suspect that his positive memories of his youth colored his attitude toward the local younger priest.
I suppose he respected him for his position in the church. Maybe in 2006 when this was written the Catholic church was not as infamous as it is now for wrongs committed by a few of its members. Today we would be much quicker to believe the possibility.

With the priest scandals in the limelight it is much easier to come to the conclusion that a priest could be a predator.
I just figured it was because he was a priest and loved by so many people in the community. He was so good with the kids and the kids really looked up to him. He was right, though. If he suspected him the community would have gone against him.
I think because he didnt believe that a priest would do that and Nick knew the community would not believe him, especially since they already think he is not doing his job, so they would think he only said ot because Maggie told him.
