Leigh Ann Jones | 23 comments I know there are tons of books that qualify, but I'd really enjoy finding one about a special education teacher that I haven't read before if anyone has any suggestions :)

message 2: by Tara (new)

Tara Bates | 1005 comments I keep mentioning her because I love her lol but Torrey Hayden is a teacher, not necessarily "special needs" like autism, downs, etc but teaches kids with anxiety disorders and the like. One Child, Ghost Girl and The Tiger's Child are all great!

Leigh Ann Jones | 23 comments One Child sounds amazing! I'm going to have to check that one out!

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I haven't read any of Torrey Hayden, but does anyone know of any books that are more specifically about teaching kids/teens/young adults with special needs? I've looked up some of Hayden's books on Amazon and most of them seem to focus more on abuse.

message 6: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (nic0lexmichele) I'm an elementary school counselor, so I do a lot of teaching in the classroom. BUT, I would love to see if there are any more specific books! Thanks! :)

message 7: by Jenncw (new)

Jenncw | 22 comments I write STEAM programming for my school district's afterschool and preschool programs, and train staff. I guess teaching is close, and I was in the classroom before. Anyone know of anything?

Tara Bates | 1005 comments There are several "main" characters in jk rowling's casual vacancy, one is a deputy headmaster (like vice principal in the uk) and one is a guidance counsellor (both at middle/ high school level). There are also a nurse, owner of a lingerie shop, retiree (can't remember if she was a sahm or had a job outside the home but she's retired In the book) and a couple teenagers.

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson

message 14: by Judith (new)

Judith | 11 comments I am going to read Night train to Lisbon by Pascal Mercier, a Swiss author I believe. It is also a movie, which is supposed to be really good. I want to read the book first though.

message 22: by Keely (new)

Keely Crilley (keelycrilley) | 7 comments I am reading "The Teacher's Secret" by Suzanne Leal.
It is about an Aussie teacher, in a small country town school which is me spot on!

You could also read Dead Poets Society if you haven't already. :)

message 23: by Megan (new)

Megan I'm also a teacher, when I started the challenge it was my first year. I had found the book Up the Down Staircase by Bel Kaufman. I would highly recommend it for any teacher, especially those working with inner city populations.

message 24: by Sara (new)

Sara (velocipedal) | 32 comments I'm surprised Stephen King's 11/22/63 isn't on here yet! The main character is an English teacher.

11/22/63 by Stephen King

message 25: by Amber (new)

Amber | 38 comments I am a math teacher at an alternative high school. I didn't get that specific, but read both The Good Girl by Mary Kubica (which has a main character who is an art teacher at an alternative high school) and To Sir, With Love by Richard Braithwaite (which is about a general studies teacher at a difficult school in England).

message 26: by Marilyn (last edited Nov 21, 2016 06:22PM) (new)

Marilyn (marilyn357) | 143 comments Tisha: The Wonderful True Love Story of a Young Teacher in the Alaskan Wilderness is the story of Annie Hobbs who left Colorado in 1927 at the age of 19 to teach in Alaska. TRUE STORY.

A Schoolteacher in Old Alaska: The Story of Hannah Breece was edited by her niece Jane Jacobs. ANOTHER TRUE STORY. Hannah was born in 1859 in Pennsylvania and went to Alaska in 1904, remaining there 14 years.

Both women lived and worked in very remote areas of Alaska.

Debbie (debzanne) | 164 comments Tony Danza has a book out that's on my TBR list called I'd Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had. It's about his first year teaching English (recently, after he retired from acting).

message 28: by Meg (new)

Meg | 4 comments Madam by Phoebe Wynn starts out with a teacher landing a dream job at a too-good-to-be-true private school. Might be more of dark-academia book, but the main character is a teacher.

Madam book review and reactions
