If you would like to collaborate with any other ideas to improve this group, post it here...

If not in the top 100 list, I would suggest adding Baal by Bertolt Brecht to Bowie's references shelf.

message 6: by KOMET (new)

KOMET | 18 comments Yesterday, BBC Radio 4 broadcast a special program about David Bowie. Its title: "DAVID BOWIE: VERBATIM."

Listen here -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06z5pts

Summary
"With previously unheard interviews, studio out takes and a collection of musings from throughout the years, the story of David Bowie's extraordinary life and career told in his own words.

"By his own count, David Bowie inhabited seven different personas throughout his career and, while each one of those creations channelled wildly different musical influences that were often difficult to identify, Bowie was always able to articulate with great conviction which musical universe he was inhabiting at each turn ..."

Hi guys...

I received a message suggesting that we make a side-reading (aside from the book of the month) which would focus on a book about Bowie. So, before we plan anything, I want to know who would be interested to see if we have a good number of members who would join in.

message 9: by Samanta (new)

Samanta (almacubana) | 183 comments I would be interested, but not in February, because I have so many books on my February reading list already.

Definitely not February... I think a bimonthly reading starting in April or May?!

Exactly, Sarah. Besides it would allow the members to have more time to get the books because most of them won't be as in hand as the regular literary ones.

Especially that most of the titles are currently out of stock...

Hello, everyone...

Our May reading will be Billy Liar... So, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss a matter that was brought to me by a few members.

They pointed out that they have been having a hard time joining the discussions because the period of time they have between the next reading is chosen and when it will start is very short. I understand their concern because not all of us live in areas where we have these books in hand by just going to the bookstore, public library or purchasing online. I will face this same problem with Billy Liar (especially because I have been trying to read everything in English and not translated).

So, in attempt to solve this problem, I thought that maybe we could choose the next reading with two months in advance. In order to do so, we can leave A Clockwork Orange as the June reading (once it has always been on the monthly polls and it always gets a good number of votes). Then our next poll can be to choose the July book, so once we reach a decision, people will have at least a month and a half to get it.

Please, let me know what you think of it.

Susie Wondering if when a new group read Topic is started, if the month/year can be added in the Title for future reference?
Assuming we'll all be here for awhile... ;)

Example: Billy Liar - May 2016

Thanks!

You're right, Susie. Yes, we would be around for at least 8 years ^^
I guess we can also archive the threads. But we could add the year.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi Susie, thank you for your suggestion... I added the month and year to the discussion threads... I hadn't done it before because every folder title has a limit of characters, so I had to cut short some of the book titles in order to fit.

Also, all discussions are saved using the book it is about as a search criteria so in the future the members just need to go on the "search discussion posts" engine (on the group home it is located above the moderators photos) and type the name of the book they are looking for :)

message 24: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb I notice that the "Billy Liar > Reading discussion - Part III: Chapters 9 to 14" has no comments which got me wondering about so many different threads for one book.

I'd prefer just one discussion thread as it makes it easier to follow the discussion. One (potentially) wide ranging discussion seems preferable to lots of bitty discussions about specific chapters, editions etc etc

I understand that splitting it up makes it easier to avoid spoilers however I think it's quite easy to discuss a book and avoid spoilers.

Or just do this....

(view spoiler)

Dunno, I'm new here, and it's just a thought. What do others think?

message 25: by Samanta (new)

Samanta (almacubana) | 183 comments I think it could work as a one-thread discussion, but people would need to learn and remember to use spoiler format.

The Reading Bibliophile | 564 comments Mod
Thanks for your suggestion Nigeyb and Samanta. In the meantime, the discussion topic has been filled with comments ;-)

We split the discussion in order to facilitate the work of the discussion leader. Some readers find this system also convenient for organising the discussion.
For some books, the splitting in parts is obvious as it follow the parts of the book (e.g. 1984).

Having said that, we can try to leave it as one-thread discussion for books that do not entail parts and use the split discussion threads for the books that are split into parts.

message 27: by Nigeyb (new)

Nigeyb ^ Thanks Cynthia. It's up to you. I prefer it simple, but whatever works for the majority.
