Ugh. I hate it when the males just fall for the girl.
Please tell me you were joking about the shadow thing.

nope if a man makes a loud sound she will cower her bottom lip will quiver and her eyes will start to water then the big strong men will think about how cute and pure she is and talk softly to her until she stops cowering.
i don't think thats a spoiler just a warning.

Yeah. I'll skip.

The whole moving in with Drake happened fast, I went with it. I thought he needed to explain things to her better.
I liked the group of guys. To me they all were super jaded and her honesty and goodness wasn't something they were used to dealing with.
I do agree that Silas was interesting. I also wanted to know more about what Drake's business was.
I hated Evangeline's friends, they sure dropped her like a hot potato! Also, instead of paying rent on the apartment why didn't Drake get them all jobs in his clubs where they would be making lots more money?

I guess different people will view it different ways. I just don't understand how someone can not only (view spoiler)
(view spoiler)
really hated it.
I'm hoping now that she has learned her lesson with the ending she will be a fast learner and things will be a lot different in the next book.
Also I didn't like how they made it seem like she wasn't that smart just because she got her GED like...wtf.

THE FOLLOWING MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!!!
even if you don't have a clue about your self worth there is still a little something called common sense which I actually believe she has but chose to ignore. (view spoiler) but, she chose to be naive hoping for the best.
Like she is in the concrete jungle with no one put her friends to worry about her well being etc. friends who she knows way better than this guy I would prob have called the cops too. A good friend would be worried esp when they know your prone to acting naive . ya know?

Might want to mark your spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the book.

our ratings aren't that different though.

also i think some specifics of your other posts might need to be marked for spoilers or at the least a spoiler warning. i'd feel bad if our conversation ruined the book for someone who might want to give it a try.

Hm, I think our main difference in opinion is Evangeline we both agree on the crazy assholiness of Drake and that he got what he deserved in the end.

(Yeah Darcy! I'm weighing in! ^_-)"
Can't wait to find out what you think of the book once your finished. Apparently some people even gave it four stars...

I don't doubt that. I've noticed that there are people that give every book 4 or 5 stars. How is that even possible? What I like is that people will even start a review with "I didn't like this one, but..."
Why are you rating it so high them?
Sorry! I'll get off my soap box now.

I understand. I guess they are thinking that the author might come across it and they don't want to hurt their feelings or possible get cursed out by fans that love the book they dislike or by the authors themselves. However, i think it best to be truthful if you are going to review it helps everyone involved and saves people a lot of time, I think.

First off this writing was bad. There was a grammar error on the first page, and while that's being picky. Little errors like that kept occurring.
Not to mention the writing was showing not telling. And the dialogue between the characters was atrocious.
Plus, when I first so this book on the shelves in the store I thought it was trying to mooch off 50 Shades fans. Everything about this book felt borrowed and dull. The writing was lifeless! And pretty lame. If I read "heads would roll" one more freaking time . . .
And Evangeline . . . no. No. No. I was not going to spend the whole book having characters tell her that she was "pretty and that she didn't see it only made her more stunning!" Fuck that shit. There's innocence and naive, but then there's just freaking stupid. Ugh.
(view spoiler)
There are over 300 pages to use to create interesting characters and utilize some writing skills. Banks can write, I just can't believe she wrote this shit. I even jumped around and speed read just to see if it would get better. I hate speed reading, but it was the only way to get through it.
I held out for the first sexy time scene to see if there was at least some tension and emotion I could get behind there. Nope. This was shit.

i don't think its you thats having a bad time I think romances are just getting to be more and more of a hot mess. Everyone is popping out a romance to cash in especially the D/s romances.

I agree with you.

Looks like I'm odd man out with this one. lol

I feel like that with UF lately.

Yes, the thing about her thinking she wasn't pretty or that she was out of shape when really she was shapely and more stunning than everyone else. ugh
I could tell at the end that Banks can write but she just chose not to.
The book lost any type of sexiness to me when (view spoiler) you go from being a virgin just a few weeks early to this. It was just like w...t...f.

This didn't bother me because I've seen it in other erotica books. It was big a few years ago, not so much now.

I have to go with Chakara, because she was doing it to "please him" and she wasn't really having fun. ..."
I think he shouldn't have done it too, it was too soon, they were jsut getting to know each other.

For sure!

I have to go with Chakara, because she was doing it to "please him" and she wasn't really having fun. ..."
I agree its fine if both are enjoying it. They are grown adults. But, she clearly wasn't comfortable with it nor was she ready for something like that. It was just what she thought she should do to please him and be closer to him. Which was another problem I had with Drake and Evangeline (view spoiler) I think he picked a weakling that that he could manipulate and then tried to delete anyone of importance that might be able to get her to smarten up.

That is true.

me too!! It's so much fun to discuss books in greater detail.

Preach!!

I thought that too! She should have had some vague street smarts.

I took it that she came from a small town, so street smarts wouldn't be the same as a person raised in the city.

I'm not entirely sure about that but possibly to some people. I've been head of house hold since I was old enough to file taxes, before that I still worked to help support me and my brothers my mother is on disability. I've been signing their school reports and homework sheets since I was 10 and having grown up conversations with their teachers about their work, getting their school clothes, cooking the meals , dealing with the bills.
She seems to be an only child yet I'm sure some of these things still apply to her as well. I'm from a small town in North Carolina. At 19 I moved to the city of Atlanta, alone. Once you learn how to navigate the grown up world there is no going back its all the same. IMHO.
I think because I already knew how to do those things and because I knew what I wanted and how people were I was able to hit the ground running and learn other things quickly as I went.
Maybe I'm different but I know there are others with similar situations.

I get this, that she knows that part of life. But it also seemed like she was sheltered in other ways. Big city living is different from small town, as someone who has lived in both there are things you don't think about. And NYC is the biggest city, has a different vibe. She seemed like she was doing ok, but it was only when she encountered Drake, a rich guy, who frankly lives in a world most of us can't imagine, that she seemed extra innocent.
I also think you are right that maybe part of why she said yes to him was there was finally someone to take care of her, that even if he was a stranger it would be nice for one to be the center instead of the one who takes care of everything.

interesting not sure what things wouldn't be thought about . I think for me it was harder trying to get back to small town living or small city living as neither the nearest cities or my town has adequate public trans etc. you can't just walk or ride the train down town and have a ball . it's very depressing.
But, I think overall this just goes back to our difference of opinion of the main character which seems to stem from our own life experiences etc.
Interesting to see how we can all read the same book and gain different meanings etc. out of it.
Will you be continuing with the series?

I take offense. ^_- As a small town country girl who occasionally gets a twang in her voice.
Farm living does not mean sheltered. Or small town. And most likely if she was finding work she'd have to a bigger city. If she had to take on that kind of responsibility she'd have streets/world smarts. Plus, now she's lived in the Big Apple for two to three years. She's had the benefits of both worlds. She's also interacted with a wide variety of people working in a bar for however long she has been.

I agree. That's something else that annoyed me about her in fact I think its the main thing. I felt like she was faking ditziness , innocence etc. just so she wouldn't have to think about the stupid decisions she was making.
I come from an area that didn't even have a mcdonalds when I was growing up. We had to go to the nearest city for mcdonalds. Something a lot of people take for granted. However people adapt its part of our survival as human beings so yeah she wasn't realistic to me.

Ooo! Will you Darcy?
I won't be."
I'm not sure if I will either. If my library can get it I'd like to see them both crash and burn though it will prob end up being a HEA which would suck because these characters don't need to be together. Also, I'm interested in book 3 which strangely is about another lead. One of Drakes me Silas and his love life.
I also doubt the writing will change. She obviously continues to be successful even when she writes s*** so why would she try to write better?

The town (4,000 people) that I grew up in didn't have a national chain restaurant until I was in 7th grade, I'm over 40 now. Even now when I go back there are only a 2, there are a couple of regional ones. The road in front of house, which was in town, didn't get paved until 6th grade. All the small towns around us had kids bussed in. My graduating class was only 120 people. If we wanted to go to the mall, it was an hour drive away to a city of 45,000, or if we wanted to go to a big town, it was 90 minutes away.
I know when I went to college, it was a bit eye opening. After college (10,000 people) I moved to the Twin Cities, things again were eye opening. City living was so different to get used to. I lived in the Twin Cities for a couple of years when a job took me to Atlanta for a few months. I didn't worry because by then I'd lived in a big city for years, but Atlanta was very different. Again eye opening for me. So while the TC's are a big city they don't feel like that.
Overall, I like the TC's, just wish that winter wasn't so long.
