When you are on a group's main page ... just underneath the group main info you'll see

DISCUSSION BOARDS .
On the far right of that line, in light grey, you'll see topics: all | new | unread

If you click UNREAD it will pop up a new page with ONLY those threads which have new posts that you haven't yet read. If you click on the RED new link on each thread it will take you directly to the newest post.

Each page has only 50 posts on it. At the end of a page of posts you'll see a little greenish/blueish list of pages like this:
previous 1 2 3 next
Click next to go to the next page. Click a particular page number to go directly to that page.

No problem, Dosha ... none of us was born knowing this stuff. I've been active on Goodreads for a couple of years and still learned new tricks recently.

I have been going to my favorites in Shelfari, printing the reviews I wrote and then retyping them in GR. At first I was mad. Very mad. Then I started having fun. I was almost like visiting old friends. I got very little work done today.

Oh gosh! Not that I want to ruin your fun or anything but... you do know you can copy and paste the text, right?

On Shelfari, highlight your review text and press CTL+C on your keyboard, (it won't seem like anything happens but it just copied the text). Next, switch to Goodreads and click in the area where you would normally type in your review. Now press CTL+V on your keyboard to paste the text into the window.

Well I did it. Now, the problem is that my GR site is huge and I don't know how to make the fonts small so i can see everything without having to scroll up and down. This is huge! I don't even need my glasses to see the text. Pictures are distorted etc. I'm a mess.

When on goodreads, press CTL+- (the minus key). You might need to do this several times to get the page to look the way you want. CTL++ (the plus key), makes things bigger.

If your mouse has a scroll-wheel, you can also hold CTL on your keyboard while rolling the wheel to make pages grow & shrink.

I don't know what I would do without the kind support of my fellow book lovers. Whew! I'm back down to normal. OMG! I think I should have just done ctrl c. doing ctrl + c just made it all go out of control.

Well, obviously I need to get back to work, but before I do.....can someone please tell how to delete a book that I have accidentally put on my shelf twice? Honestly, I would expect this to be easy, but I cannot figure out how. So, yet again, I expose my ignorance to the whole world... sigh

Do you know how to "edit" your review on the book page view? If so, when you select that, at the bottom of the page on the left, directly underneath the "save" button, select "remove from my books."

I don't have that option. there is nothing under my save button. On the right, there is "delete review", but that does not get rid of the book. I had it twice in currently reading by mistake. I just changed the shelf to read. So, now it looks like I read it already and I'm currently reading it.

Go to the book page for the book (just click on the book title). Don't try to do this from your bookshelf. Then follow the instruction above.

"Go to the book page for the book". Where is this? Home?

Just click on the title for the book you want to remove. It will launch the book page for the title.

maybe i need to be in a different browser? I'm in chrome. I don't see what you see. That is okay. I'll just get it off of currently reading by making it say read. That is the best I can do. Thanks anyway.

You can also delete books from your shelves

Go to "My Books"
Type in the name of the book you want to delete in the search box
On the right hand side next to the book details you will see a small "x"
Click the x and confirm that you want to delete the book.

Forgot to mention that you need to be in "list view" for this. To switch list view click the symbol on the top right hand side with the three lines.

AHA!! Now, I get it, I was trying to make it happen in cover view rather than in list view (table view). Thanks Lauren and Jonetta. I need a stiff drink.

Thank you for that. My shelf was i list view and I didn't know I could change it to see book covers. So much better now.

My preference is actually for the list view so that I can see all the details, which you can also set according to what you want to see by clicking "settings" at the top of the page.

That said, I also like seeing all the covers lined up in a row sometimes - it's pretty and similar to the way Shelfari looks.

I haven't decided what to do yet. I have both accounts all along and the main difference is the shelfari tags, which I like. I don't see a place for them on goodreads. I feel like I should just not do any importing. Any thoughts?

Not even sure if this is in the right place so please bare with me. I have one book on my currently reading shelf. It's on there but when looking at shelfs with (numbers) it says zero. How do i get it to count on my currently reading shelf? hope that makes sense

Dawn .. check to be sure that you selected the Goodreads "currently reading" shelf, rather than a personal tag/shelf with that same name.

If that's not the source, you can report it in the Goodreads Feedback group under the BUGS folder.

"Tags" are called "Shelves" or "Genres" on Goodreads, but they function pretty much the same as on Shelfari. When you add (or edit) a book you'll see a box marked "Bookshelves/Tags" and inside the box it says "Choose shelves" Click on that link and you'll get a drop-down menu. Any tags/shelves you've used in the past will appear there. If you haven't used the tag you want before, you have the option at the bottom of that box to "Add new shelf" - click that link and type in the shelf/tag you want to use and it will be added to the book, AND it will be part of the drop down menu the next time you add a book.

How do I get rid of all of these posts from 2014?

Not sure what you mean. If you want to go to the newest posts in any thread, click on the red new link and it will take you directly to the newest post.

If you want to read an older thread that doesn't have a new post, but want to go to the end of that thread rather than the beginning ... at the top of the thread click date and it will reverse the order so the newest is first. ... Of course, if you have several new comments you'll read the last one before the first one.

In a group's main page you can also click the UNREAD link on the far right (same line as DISCUSSION BOARD) That will open a new page with ONLY the threads which have new posts since the last time you visited. Then you can click on the NEW link in each thread to go directly to the first unread remark.

I think I will just leave well enough alone. I will just be sticking with Goodreads for the future since it was kind of a bother to enter twice even with cutting and pasting. I did enjoy the discussions on Shelfari, though, and will now try to find similar on Goodreads. Thanks for your help!

I don't know about LibraryThing, but you can import books, etc, to Leafmarks.

Yes. I just imported my Shelfari list to Library Thing yesterday and it went very smoothly. It seems to focus more on cataloging your books, but there are discussion groups over there. I've only been on it a day so I'm not familiar with the whole site. They usually charge a fee, but they're offering a free lifetime membership for Shelfari users so I took them up on their offer.

Thanks Bella. In the process of transferring to leafmarks as we speak. I managed to download my shelfari shelf so might give it a try out in LibaryThing as well...

For those of you who have successfully imported your books here over the past few days, how long did it take? I clicked import yesterday morning and so far my books haven't appeared.

It took four days for mine to import. There were lots of mistakes though such as tbr books being marked read, duplicates (about 200), and missing reviews.

Is everyone importing from Shelfari to a brand new Goodreads account?
I imported my bookshelf from Shelfari in 2014 ( but haven't added anything since then). I'm afraid if I import again I'll make a mess of my current shelf. Over 900 books are here--with data mostly accurate. Please let me know how it worked if you tried importing to an account that already had some of your books previously entered.

Does anyone know how to not have all new threads on a discussion have a default of notification? In particular, I am in the Paging All Bookworms group which just moved here from Shelfari. I do want notifications when someone adds to the general book review thread, or my own thread, but not whenever someone adds their own thread -- if everyone comes over from Shelfari, there could be hundreds. I don't want to have to edit every thread separately, but they seem to be defaulting to notify.

Underneath the description of the group on the group homepage, next to the "you are a member" there is a link that says "Edit"

Click that, scroll to the bottom of the page to where it says "edit group discussion updates" - you should be able to change your notification settings.

Also, at the bottom of each thread there is a "notify me when people comment" link. You can choose how you want to be notified of comments

In addition, when you join a group for the first time, you can select how you want to receive notifications.

Personally, I prefer to only get notifications in the site and the app without emails. Others prefer to get an email once a day.

Melissa it took 3 days for mine to go across and 64 did not make it. I don't know why.

EVERYONE having problems with their shelf import....

I suggest you join this group: Goodreads Feedback Group
The first person who reports this "bug" should create a NEW message and place it in the "Bugs" folder
When you click "new" you'll get a new page ... it will ask for topic - I'd suggest Shelfari import bug ...

Then you'll see a box "This topic is about" ... just ignore that (it's a place where you could insert a specific book if this were about a book discussion ... but this isn't)

Then Folder and a box with "select" in it ... click that box and you'll get a drop-down menu ... click BUGS

Then type your question/description of the bug.

I've suggested this several times but haven't seen a thread about it yet in the Feedback group. It is the group that the Goodreads team monitors constantly and the most likely place for you to get help with your import.

Once someone has started the thread, everyone else can post their own remarks in it to add their voice to the issue.

Good luck to you. I didn't have to import my shelves because I've maintained parallel shelves here since 2008, a few months after I joined Shelfari.

I have a question. I know how to bold, italicize or underline something in a discussion post.

Am I able to strikethrough a word or phrase?

At shelfari I was able to use < strike >< /strike > (without the spaces), but that doesn't seem to be working here.
