Barbara | 4 comments I just joined and am looking for recommendations of writers who are on a par or close to Georgette Heyer. I love Heyer and have read all of her books, several of them three or four times--A CIVIL CONTRACT--for instance. Although I have tried many more contemporary writers of Regencies, none quite do the trick. I have just copied the names of several writers that members have mentioned as favorites. Anybody have some Heyeresques? Here's hoping. Barbara

QNPoohBear | 49 comments NO ONE is on par with Georgette Heyer. She was the best.Clare Darcy is Georgette Heyer-lite; Daisy Vivian also Heyer-lite; Marion Chesney - very funny but skirts the edge of propriety; Barbara Metzger - very very funny, usually involved dogs; Carola Dunn; Regina Scott are also favorites. Join the Georgette Heyer Fans group. You will find many more recommendations there.

Barbara | 4 comments Thanks so much for this info! I have read a couple of Metzger's and Chesney. I enjoyed them, but...you're right; there's no one quite so good. Thanks for the tip about the fan group. I'll investigate! Happy Reading!

QNPoohBear | 49 comments Jude Morgan is something like a cross between Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer. My personal favorite is Indescretion.

Judith | 9 comments Elizabeth Mansfield, in my opinion, was unequalled as a Heyer successor, but is now joined with Jude Morgan. Mansfield focuses on character and personality in her books and the plot unfolds from these. The characters live, and are not the all too often run-of-today's mill of Heathcliff rakes to be reformed, and odd heroines with pet goats in their bedrooms (yes, there is a regency romance with a goat (presumably trained in personal habits--can one so train a goat?) in her bedroom, and she is a guest at that!

Barbara | 4 comments I appreciate these comments and the info on other regro writers! I ordered three of Clare Darcy's from Alibris and look forward to reading them. Right now I am rereading ARABELLA by Heyer as my upstairs book--the one I read in bed that is guaranteed not to give me the heebiejeebies.

Barbara | 4 comments I want to thank all of you for the wonderful recommendations you gave me for Regency writers like Georgette Heyer. I'll give a special
shout out to QNPoohBear for telling me about Clare Darcy. I've read three so far and LOVE them. Love her Heyer Light style, interesting style that seems so authentic!

Glad you are enjoying her. I like her Heyer-light style too. I went through the library catalog and typed in Walker Regency Romance as a keyword and got a lot of good old Heyer copycats. The quality of writing started to fall off by the late 90s/early 2000s. There's a small number of self-published Austen/Heyer type e-books on Smash Words and Amazon now.
