Beastly discussion

We have read very few pages, yet we understand the concept of the book.

I'm so excited to read this. It sounds really interesting so far, and I can't wait to see what happens.

The book Beastly by Alex Flinn answers questions about the character in just the first paragraph. For example, what is the attitude of the character? From the characters thoughts, he seems self centered, and thinks he is better than everybody else. Another question is what does the character's family think of the character? This question can bring out lot about the character. It shows what their family values are, and what the characters family encourages the character to do. The father of Kyle seems to bring out Kyle's self centered thinking. This shows how the character was raised with these values, and acts in life with these fowl opinions. If he was raised like that, he goes through life with this to influence his thinking and decisions. This is how he was raised. Questions like these add to the picture and personality of the character and the readers thought toward them.

I believe my book is in 1st person because we see the whole world through Kyle, the main character's, eyes. We see nothing more and nothing less. Neither do we hear any more nor any less than what he hears. We can also hear only Kyle's thoughts. Nobody else full life is described in this point of view. He refers to himself as "me". The author did this to show Kyle as the beast. This lets us have a deeper view into the main characters mind. It gives us information about how he views other people around him and the world.

In the passage where Kendra is explaining to Kyle that he can not find true love on the internet, the mood of disapproval literally drips from the words. “Relieving you of your delusions. It won’t work, trying to meet someone online, find true love that way. It won’t work.” (119) You can practically hear her disapproval and anger surrounding the subject. The writer does this to add attitude to Kendra and to create a better view of her to the reader.

In the scene where Kyle is asking the maid where his father is staying and he finds out he won't stay in the same house, there is an aggravated mood that radiates from the scene. The author establishes this by showing how the character feels and thinks toward this situation. She also shows it through the character's enraged tone and voice that becomes louder and more aggressive and frustrated. A writer chooses a certain mood for a scene to show how a character will react, and to get the reader to feel how the characters are feeling from the aura of a certain mood. This makes the reader more captivated with the story, and lets them experience all the emotion thrown into the scene.

Beastly is a fantastical story which is based on the story "Beauty and the Beast". Though this story takes place in a realistic setting where the main character Kyle is self centered and lives in New York at a rich kid school, the turn of events make it fantasy. Because of his current and past cruel actions, he is turned into a beast, and has a chance to turn back since he had done one kindness. Someone must fall in love with him in the span of 2 years. Though this magical curse was cast upon him, Kyle is still human on the inside. He still feels emotions like love and sorrow, and can feels desperate or hopeless. Other magical elements include a magic mirror that can show Kyle anyone if he asks, and a group chat of other magical creatures that were cursed. All this adds up to create the amazing story of beastly, full of magic, emotion, and great twists that hint to the original fairy tale.

In a certain part Magda is excited and jittery for a moment while talking to Kyle. She says over and over again that Kyle doesn't have to let the girl go. She doesn’t explain anything about this plan until Kyle’s curiosity gets the best of him and he asks what she meant. As she starts to explain the chapter ends leaving the reader wondering what she could be thinking. Even as the next chapter continues we’re still left unsure about what the plan is, and the reader is left to wonder what will happen.

The world is filled with rain and snow. People walk from the subway to the train system to their jobs. Gloomy is what you usually see with people slumping around from place to place, but some people are filled with happiness. Of course this happiness comes in sad ways. Underage drinking, doing drugs, hooking up, and ignoring others. In New York you follow a certain set of rules nobody has written. Remain silent, normal, or wild in order not to be considered ”weird for NY”. Staying on the low is what you try to do, one little difference and you’re a freak. A lunatic. Psychotic. Nobody cares if something happens to you because what they care about is staying “normal”.

Two worlds have been separated for centuries, one the mortal world, one the power world. This story world takes place in 2016, so the mortal world is modern. There is technology like i phones, flat screen tvs, and new other technology that is developed. Like at this time, the internet thrives from viewers on websites and YouTube. The power world is run mostly by magic, and all people have at least simple magic that can help them find something that was lost or to bring something to them. They make their own clothes and feed on livestock and plants. They use magic instead of technology.
