Reading 1001 discussion

Hangover Square aptly named since the main characters are alcoholics. George Bone is an out-of-work man, alcoholic and smitten with Netta Longdon an out-of-work actress who is also an alcoholic. Netta has a group of “friends” that are always around her and drinking. These are unlikable characters in a cycle of predictable behavior. About half way through the book I felt things started to change and I was curious to read what would happen next so my desire and speed of reading picked up. Patrick Hamilton is a good writer and I enjoyed his style and the historical aspects of the book.

I gave this one 3 stars. Despite the bleak subject matter and plot it was darkly funny in some ways, and the dissociative disorder George seems to have with his "dead moods" were interesting. It wasn't necessarily my jam though.
