Welcome to the February birthstone challenge. Due to the imminent demise of Shelfari, this will be the last month of the challenge posted there. We have a new home on Leafmarks under the group “Dusty’s Treasure Trove of Books”. Many thanks to Dusty for graciously hosting this. This month, I will post the challenge in both spots. All are encouraged to join the fun. Starting in March, it will be Leafmarks only. This month’s birthstone is the amethyst.
Amethyst, the gemstone believed by ancient Greeks and Romans to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus, also is said to keep the wearer clear-headed and quick-witted. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning “not drunk”.
Amethyst is purple quartz, a beautiful blend of violet and red that can found in every corner of the earth. Historically, the finest amethyst were found in Russia and were featured in much royal European jewelry. Today, while Brazil is the primary source of this gemstone, fine material can be found elsewhere, especially in Zambia.
It’s said that the signet ring worn by Cleopatra was an amethyst, engraved with the figure of Mithras, a Persian deity symbolizing the Divine Idea, Source of Light and Life. It is also said to be the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the figure of his assistant, Cupid. Saint Valentine’s Day is still observed in February.
1. Read a book whose cover features a shade of purple (post the cover image).
2. Read a book with a memorable drinking scene.
3. Read book that includes a love story.
Hope you have a fun February!
