Checking in!This is a re-read for me but I loved it the first time. I was wanting to re-read the series now that the 4th book is FINALLY coming out in April. I'll be doing audio for it this time though.
Do you have a time frame that you want to read this? I'm open!
I'm listening this go round. Let's see, I like this narrator. She's read plenty of other stuff and she does a good job. Hooowever- I don't think she's the right fit for this series. Her voice is too...young. Or something. Even though the MC is a female I think a male narrator might have been better. I don't know. It loses some of the creep factor with her, imo. I'm on Chapter 4- (view spoiler)

What a burden she has with her 'gift'. No eye contact. She can't tell the humans they're being haunted meanwhile the ghosts are sucking their energy! I like Devlin. First assumption that the ghosts are his wife and daughter who were murdered and maybe that's why he is a detective....
Well, I got all caught up in the book again. I don't usually like scary movies and I don't really read Horror novels but I do like a good creepy or spooky one every now and then. I think that's why I liked this series so much. Same with EiT. Creep factor!! Also, voodoo stuff really freaks me out. I blame it on that movie... The Serpent and the Rainbow? Something like that. At the same time, I'm mesmerized by it, lol.Up to Ch. 23- (view spoiler)
Yeah, some of those scenes in EiT scared the crap out of me! I keep waiting for those to come out on audio. Oooh, they would be so good!
Nichole wrote: "Yeah, some of those scenes in EiT scared the crap out of me! I keep waiting for those to come out on audio. Oooh, they would be so good!"That would be good! What I'm discovering, the more I listen to audio, is that the reader can influence my mental image of the characters. Not that it's all bad but I read the first 7 of the fever series and then listened to this last one. I liked the book but the voice didn't really match my own ideas sometimes. Just different.
Anyway, I'm really liking the writing style of this new author to me. And it's different than other paranormal books which is great. I'm wondering what other secrets Amelia's dad is keeping from her. And how her true heritage will show itself in the book. Intriguing her 'connection' with Devlin- physical and otherwise! And who are these 'others' and are they what's really zapping her energy when she's around him??
And the connection to the murder and the secret society- darn real life and kids, I want to read today!!
So many questions!!! And of course they're not all answered in this book. I hate it that she grew up with so little information about her abilities. Come on dad! Why would you withhold information that can potentially save her! It kind of drives me crazy, lol. 4 rules and that's it. Right, because that kind of crap works indefinitely.
Right?! And why did she suddenly see ghosts at age 9? The creepy guy in her dad's cemetery. And now she saw him again. The harbinger....
Well, I just finished and ... I forgot how little was resolved!! I couldn't remember what was in this book or the 3rd book. That's right, I said the 3rd book. She goes out of town for the next one. I think she might learn more about her abilities and stuff but I can't remember everything. (view spoiler)
I still loved it. It just has that creepy and mysterious atmosphere that I love and have a hard time finding in other books. If you're up for it, I'd like to read the rest of them :) It's not a rush order or anything. I've been waiting for years already what's the rush, lol. If you decide you want to BR the others just let me know!
Also, I got used to the narrator. It's still not the voice I had in mind but she does a good job overall. They should have added some creepy background music though, lol.
I will definitely read the rest with you!I'm a little more than half done now. And wow it is creepy- in a good way. Yes I should have creepy music playing while I'm reading it too;)
So hmm- yes wife and daughter ghosts were not a surprise. I wonder how the PI comes into it. Somehow I think he had something to do with their deaths.....
I love the gullah piece- interesting! I've read a few others that include the traditions in the stories and they are a fun twist. Even EIT did right? When they were in New Orleans?
I think so. I love that stuff too :) Also any kind of Native American creepy stuff, lol. Like in Red Fox.
Stacey wrote: "Right?! And why did she suddenly see ghosts at age 9? The creepy guy in her dad's cemetery. And now she saw him again. The harbinger...."Yeah! What was the trigger at age 9?? And who is that ghost? That was never fully explained and I can't remember if it's explained later.
Plot twist! I was waiting for something darker to come out about Devlin. Obviously he is sucking her energy somehow and for some reason but the medallion..... Hmmmmmm!!!
And I wonder if/when we will hear about her near death experience- why she has walked through the door and back etc. And why, if she's adopted, do she and her adoptive father both have the 'gift' of seeing ghosts?
Yeah, why is he wearing that medallion when he doesn't even believe? Huh? Huh? Lol!And I think that is her real father. She was just adopted by her step-mother. At least I'm pretty sure...
Done! So, hmmm. Some things came to fruition that I thought would. I wasn't surprised about Daniel, except the really bizarre circumstances surrounding that revelation were a cool twist! And the 'detective'?! Wow- I knew something was strange with him but surprised... Yes, I am thinking mom wanted to tell her dad had an affair or something- and they adopted her. And since her mom couldn't have kids that is really interesting. I'm sure we will hear more of that as the story unfolds. But Camille?! I thought she might have been in on it for a while- guess not! I'm not surprised of the big reveal of Devlin being in the Claws for some reason, not that I thought he had anything to do with the murders. I really liked it! So much so I already downloaded book 2- ready when you are??! ;)
And on a side note- I know they had some 'issues' in the intimacy area, but I think I will like Ms Steven's description of the scenes much better than Karina Halle's nasty ones! I think I'm done with her for a while....
The detective surprised me too. Although, I felt like I should have guessed it :) Yes, I really wanted to know what the mom wanted to say about her father! Gimme the deets :P I really thought Camille had something to do with it too. As far as Devlin being part of the Claws- not so much a surprise because of the family he came from but what the heck happened there? I think it might shed some light in the 3rd book. I know we get a lot more info about his wife and stuff. I'm pretty sure we get some of Amelia's background or whatever in the 2nd book.I have the next one ready to go too, right after I finish about 3-4 books lol. It all depends on what is called for my team challenges. So maybe mid to end of next week?
Ok sounds good!Right- wondering what came first- his 'issues' with the family (he was a part of the parapsychology group!) or the wife or vice versa. And how/why did he turn his back on all that. Maybe when he tried to get Dr Shaw to get him through to see them one more time or something- he just shut it all down? I guess we will find out!
Bah! My challenges aren't lining up and I'm struggling to catch up. I have 3 books to read and then, maybe, I can start the 2nd one. By then though, I'll have new tasks and who knows! So I might be able to start this next weekend- or not, lol. I haven't even read The Offer. I had to just put that aside for another time. I haven't forgotten, I'm just trying to work it in together.
I finished the 2nd and halfway through the third. So whenever is fine;) We'll chat when you're ready!
Okay! I'm about halfway through the third and, while I do like it, not as much as the first two. Hopefully it picks up in the second half. It's just a lot of her figuring things out in her head but not a lot of action yet.
*sigh* No, I haven't even re-read the 2nd book yet. I have them all loaded and ready to go but my team challenges are not cooperating, lol. I'm really hoping to start it this week though and maybe I can even get the 3rd read soon! I've read them before but it's been so long that I only vaguely remember stuff.
*crosses fingers*
I have book four but may break and read something in between. The prophet did pick up the action in the second half!
I have a plan!! If things work out right, I should be able to start The Kingdom on Wed/Thurs. Then, if I'm lucky, The Prophet will work for a team challenge and I can start it right after! And if I'm really really lucky it won't be too long for the 4th, lol.
I started The Kingdom this morning! Yay, finally!!The thing I love about these books is the atmosphere. She does creepy extremely well, lol. I'm not very far in but so far she has seen a face in the lake, a ghost on the dock, the poor bait dog with his chewed up face, and the creepy guy at the cemetery who just slithered away like a snake or spider. *shudders* Then there is the thing in the woods that hasn't made an appearance yet...
Okay! I finished up #2. That was even better the 2nd time. So freaking creepy!I had forgotten all of the details of her heritage. I knew she found out some things about herself but couldn't remember what.
First- the creepiest scene was when she was... I don't remember exactly a cave or something? , but with Thane and it got dark and something grabbed her up against them and was licking her neck. It wasn't Thane but something else. I would have shit myself, lol. Not pee, the whole shebang, haha! It touched her and licked her!!! Aaaaaackk! Scared the crap outta me.
Second- this kind of reminds me of The Raven Cycle series. It's nothing like it but for all the answers we get there are a hundred new questions now. At least I kind of know what's going on, lol.
*speaking of that, the 4th book comes out next month... just saying, lol.
Where is Harper? Will we hear about these people again? Who was the child ghost she was reaching for under the lake? What's with the creepy guardian guy? Is he evil or what? What about the old guy in the cemetery? Is he a guardian of sorts too? Or just a bad ghost? Will she battle that great evil at some point? How? Will she learn how to use her powers? And on and on...
I know she learns a lot in the next book about her powers and stuff but I can't remember anything! Well, i remember a lot is brought to light about Mariana and what a nasty piece of work she was and her affair and stuff but that's about it.
I wasn't lucky and have 2 books to read before I can start the 3rd *crosses fingers*
You are right about the connection to the Raven books! Lots of questions. I love both series now! I'm wondering about the old ghost in the cemetery too- she questions now that maybe he's there as a guardian or something maybe?? And that miriama is a real piece of work! Yikes she's scary! And that whole black magic stuff creeps me out!! Some answers in book 3 but still loads of questions. Can't wait for Raven 4!
Stacey....oh, Stacey....I'm finally able to start my re-read of
. So hopefully I can listen to the next book before too long! It releases tomorrow!
Stacey. Stacey. Stacey. Hi.
I finished this morning and I liked it even more this time. I think the audio really helped. First time- 4 stars. This time 5 stars!
I know this didn't have the creepy factor that the others do but I still found it really creepy. The whole Darius thing and voodoo again. That scares the crap outta me, lol.
I'm ready for the next book! I already downloaded it and it fits for Bingo this week. How lucky is that?
Oh you are lucky! I just downloaded it too so I'm ready! I will be reading though so will take a bit longer. Looking forward to it!
Great!! I think I'm going to wait until tomorrow to start it. I've had a looong day and I'm not sure if I'll even see 9pm :D I'm so tired!
Finally started! Only a little way in but really like it! I think it'll be creepier than the last one...
Oh, you just wait! *skittering*I have some stuff to put in spoilers but I'm too lazy right now, lol.
Nichole wrote: "Through Ch. 18- What a creepy start to the book! She's being haunted by her own ghost. In the last book she met her ghost Amelia Gray in the veil and she said "what you are, I once was and what I ..."I'm 3/4 done but wanted to check in! Still waiting for the other 'shoe' to drop with Dr Shaw- I mean, really? They're just friends? No talk of Ethan?? Weird. And when he was meeting her in the cemetery and wasn't anywhere to be found and then popped up after the creepy grandson followed her around and tried to attack her with the bees? She finds his phone but i never saw where she returned it to him or asked him about it? Like parts are just left out. And let's talk about Devlin! Obviously he's 'something' peculiar and has some gifts as well. That's why the grandfather is all over him about Amelia i think. but their relationship- I just don't feel it. Their connection is disconnected to me. I'm not getting them. Besides she always seems to talk about how they won't stay together or how many secrets they have from each other. I don't know. They don't do it for me.
And yes she's being cavalier! Micah isn't a threat to me... um- hello?? The crazy bee boy??? Bzzzzzzz
