Zadignose | 444 comments I was very harsh in my criticism of Lysistrata, which probably puts me in the minority opinion. It kind of turned me off to Aristophanes generally, which surprised me because his reputation as comic and agitator made me think I would really like his writings.

I do also find most theater less accessible to me and less interesting than other literary forms... well okay, it's on par with short poetry for the "I don't quite get it" factor. But I have read some great things in each medium, so... hmmm...

I tend to agree with you about Lysistrata. The first time I read it I thought it was actually pretty stupid. In fact a lot of the Greek comedies were like that - everyone running around with big masks and big erections.

I've enjoyed Lysistrata so far. The bit where the women confuse the magistrate had me giggling like a schoolboy.
