Hello!! Just. Checking in to see how the reading is going.... I've been crazy nonstop and have going read chapter one... But by the end of this week I should be finished....
The start was interesting.... The way Morrison tells a story is so beautiful. She reminds me of John Steinbeck who wrote East of Eden.. (BTW) One of my fav books. The way she uses words is art.
Let me know how your reading is coming....

Hello RLT Reads Book Club... Let me give you some background on Maryland and the first two chapters.
Morrison is writing in an early era, 1682. America was still a colony of Great Britain. It would be almost another 100 years before the Independence Revolution and another 100 years before the Civil War that ended slavery.
Maryland was founded specifically for Catholics. In the backdrop of the Reformation, Catholics were persecuted throughout Europe. A deal was cut and Maryland became the colony for Catholics to live and practice their faith unabridged.
As you read through chapter two you will see the contempt for Catholics which was wide spread. And you can also see the religious tension even in chapter one... It will be interesting to see how religion plays out in this book... I'm also curious of why Morrison choose this era to write about...
