Pretties is my favorite of the whole series. I loved reading about Zane and the ending blew me away. I didn't see that twist coming. Tally is a strong heroine and fought hard to keep her identity.
I love the Uglies series; I've read it a few times now, and I didn't mind picking Pretties back up for a reread this month. It is a great second book. It jumps right into the action, which is the advantage that second books have, and retains continuity with setting, language, and characterization.Zane is a great character. He's complex, and yet we can root for him as a hero. Him and Tally have a natural chemistry that makes their relationship enjoyable.
I think my favorite scene is the ice rink "trick". It's well planned and yet there is tension because so much can go wrong. Everyone is involved, so you feel the clique that Westerfeld spent so much time setting up.
One character I've never felt a connection to was Peris. He's always been an important part of Tally's life, but I don't feel like we ever get the opportunity to understand why. That might be intentional, since he's more a part of her past at this point than her future.
I read the Uglies series quite some time ago, picking it up again has been incredible because this series was the first dystopian I ever read. The action and how Westerfeld create this world blew my mind away the first time and now again. Besides, the fact that he criticizes many aspects of our society while talking about many things that, as a teenager, seemed so important was a great way to keep the story going.
I was so confused with the beginning, we got a Pretty minded Tally which was completely different from the character we read about in the first book. I knew about the changes the operation made in the brain but I hadn't fully grasp the scope of said modifications.
I agree with Tania about Zane, he was new and interesting and, in my opinion, had more complexity than David. Regretting the operation and who he became, knowing something was very wrong and craving that feeling of being focused, being bubbly.
Other great character is Shay, I actually dislike her a lot, she's selfish, a little bit greedy, attention seeker and plainly mean. But that's what this society made her be, her transformation is sad and the shocking twist at the end was awesome.
Oh I will read the next one, just to see if my opinion about it changes or remains te same.
I don't know if I really like Pretties I guess it is just not my kind of story maybe I don't know. I felt let down when in the end Tally, Zane, David and Shay went through every thing known to man, teenagers or something and then they are split up and captured and changed into something that they don't want to be and totally betrayed by people that pretended to be their friend. And it doesn't end there the story continues in another book what? sigh! I like happy endings so I guess that might be the problem. The characters were great I was totally into them even the villians . The story had good flow and action and adventure which I like but I still felt let down. I guess it is the whole happy ending thing.
It's been a while since I read them, and it was all at once so I'm struggling to remember what happened in which. Zane was definitely my favourite character, but I wasn't really a fan of Tally.
Favorite character was Zane, though I liked Tally more in Pretties than in Uglies. Maddy, Shay, & Dr. Cable are my least favorite characters. Since the series seems to be improving, I will definitely read the next book. I think my favorite part was their balloon escape, and the least favorite part(s) was the recurring princess in a tower dream.
