Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Greetings Space Opera Fans!

What if you suspected something was living beneath the ice on Jupiter's moon Europa, but when you get there, it's not just some space-microbes, but a hostile alien species? That's the premise behind The Frozen Sky by Jeff Carlson.

Here's the book blurb:

BENEATH THE ICE

Something is alive inside Jupiter's ice moon Europa. Robot probes find an ancient tunnel beneath the surface, its walls carved with strange hieroglyphics. Led by elite engineer Alexis Vonderach, a team of scientists descends into the dark... where they confront a savage race older than mankind...

FIRST CONTACT

Based on the award-winning short story, The Frozen Sky is a new full-length sci fi thriller novel from the international bestselling author of Plague Year.

And that surprises us ... why? Hah! Sales are good, but reviews are nice as well from an authors point of view.

Jon Abbott | 48 comments Boring. I'm at 9% and have no interest in what happens to the characters. There is no "hook" - nothing to want me to know more.

By contrast, by 2% into Drysine Legacy we know that the Admiralty has f**ked up again, that there is a warrior who has gone against all of her training and culture and another warrior from the same culture who admires her and yet vows to kill her the first chance he gets. That is a hook. Drysine appears good enough that I've stopped reading it, and started book 1 in the series: Joel Shepherd's Renegade.

I've iced The Frozen Sky as a DNF.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) Bummer...

And this is a best-selling traditionally published author. I guess it's just not for everybody.

Gosh, I so agree. This was almost a DNF for me. I hung in there, but I felt the story amounted to two wildly exciting action sequences strung together with mind numbing boredom

Krzysztof | 50 comments I wasn't impressed with beginning too and was worried that whole book will be about (view spoiler) fortunately that was not. From there, book got better

is not great book but I'd like it even when narrator was only ok

Anna, I've heard a lot of folk saying this was better as a short story/novella. Perhaps that is true. There did seem to be a lot of extra narrative and the book did feel overly long.

Fiannawolf | 163 comments Been reading it at work. Will try to get a proper review out when done.

Most times its either, OMG YEAH BOOK GOOD! or *thumbs up* or Oh my god why.

Fiannawolf | 163 comments I thought this book was a decent ride. Von especially. But then again I am fairly easy to please.

Am I going to read the 2nd book? Pretty much.

Yay days off!

20 pages into the next one and I can tell this is already an improvement.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just started this and am 1/4 the way through.... and may I say all those that hated this book... am I glad I didn't pay attention!

This is fascinating and action packed! I'm really enjoying it. So there!

Niels Bugge | 141 comments I've nearly finished this one, and I'm kinda on the fence whether the "always perfect, trust those who gives you least reason to trust them" protagonist is a retard or not.

Just snatch one of those buggers, put in a cage and try to communicate with it for crying out loud.
