Tracy Chevalier's novel "Remarkable Creatures" are both the early nineteenth century female fossil hunters who star in this novel but also the frightening monsters they unlock from the stone around Lyme, England. As spinsters who venture alone to scrabble among the rocks of the coast looking for "curries," they inhabit a world at odds with the surrounding culture as the creatures they unearth disturb presiding views of creation and God. Chevalier's elegant prose captures cleanly the emotions of people living outside the parameters of their world, ideas at odds with prevailing wisdom and beneath the surface the mysterious monsters that tie it all together.
