I'm trying to remember a book from the mid '80s, but I cannot remember the title or author. It featured a variety of woodland creatures in a winter setting. The bear in the story makes a sacrifice that benefits the other creatures. I remember a woodland scene with a bright star in the heavens on the cover and the word "gift" as perhaps part of the title. While it was a "simple" book, I hesitate to call it a children's or YA book, though I'm equally reluctant to file it under "spirituality/new age." (But I'd be happy to be wrong on either account; memories are fuzzy things.)

Sounds a lot like "Barrington Bunny" by Martin Bell (from his book "The Way of the Wolf"). It's set in the woods around Christmastime and ends [*spoiler!*] with the title character sacrificing his life to save a baby field mouse from freezing. Though it's written like a children's story, it definitely has a spiritual or "new age" vibe. (The sad ending usually makes children cry.) Of course, it's about a bunny, not a bear--but the name "Barrington" may have played a trick on your memory after all this time. :-)
