Kathleen | 362 comments I thought some of these titles were at least 10 years newer, especially Animal Farm and 1984. I've read or listened to all, except Brideshead Revisited.

Jeanie | 4024 comments I've only read Animal Farm and 1984 in print and saw the movies of the others. ;) I knew 1984 came out then because the title merely transposed the last two numbers of the date it was written--1948--although it was published the next year, 1949.

Msjodi777 | 52 comments Uh, oh, now you are getting closer to my lifetime... though I didn't learn to read for 2 years after the end of the 1940s, I have read Animal Farm, 1984, Tales of the South Pacific and perhaps, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (though it would have been a lot closer to the 40s than to today, so it's pretty blurry whether I did read it. - I read a lot of books from 6th thru 12th grade, cause my parents belonged to the book of the month club, and got 2 books every month, most of which I read after they did.) Of course, in high school, I was reading more

Frances Parkinson Keyes
Came A Cavalier
Crescent Carnival
All That Glitters

Taylor Caldwell
The Arm and the Darkness
The Eagles Gather
Time No Longer
THE EARTH IS THE LORD'S

Thomas B. Costain
For My Great Folly
The Conquering Family

Those are just the ones written in the 40s though all three of these were still writing until they died. Don't suppose any of these were "best sellers" but they were quick fun reads. <><

Melanti | 126 comments I've read four.

Cheaper by the Dozen is amusing, but I doubt it would have prompted any sort of discussion.

I didn't like either 1984 or Animal Farm, but I agree both make great fodder for book clubs.

I think A Tree Grows in Brooklyn falls in that nice middle ground where it's both a good book and provides for decent discussions.

Travis (travistousant) | 543 comments Animal Farm is one of the greatest and most relevant books ever written in my opinion. While I like the ideas in 1984 it is a horrid book.

Tales of the South Pacific I hope to get to one day

Margo | -3 comments I've read Brideshead Revisited which I loved and the two Orwell books which I didn't! Spent the whole of Animal Farm trying to figure out who, or what, the different animals represented. 1984 imo made a better film than a book. I remember when the film ended the entire audience sat in silence for what felt like ages. It's the only time I have experienced that in a cinema.

Fran Wilkins | 850 comments Right now I'm reading All the King's Men and am loving it! I can't believe I never read it before.

message 8: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1767 comments I've read all except Raintree County. I'm struck by the fact that 3 of them are girls' stories written by women (The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, The Member of the Wedding & A Tree Grows in Brooklyn) and another is about a family (Cheaper by the Dozen) written by brother & sister.

Well, the paranormal romance type vampires anyway. Don't forget Dracula. And then there were Anne Rice's vampires which were in the 80's.

Love the Anne Rice books! That lady wrote some good vampires ;-)

They will have to feature in you 1980s book club Julie!
